You have a good signing, League Two will suit him.
He's been in and out of the Argyle team, young loanees from PL teams have been preferred but many Argyle fans rate him as our best defender this season.

He's probably moved up north to be closer to family.
He's a leader and for a big centre-back is comfortable on the ball.
The downside is he has no pace and is slow on the turn and will struggle against pacy strikers.

Does this mean Derek Adams is about to be named as your new manager?
Canavan was a favourite of his and he signed him.

Good luck to him, he'll be missed.

 

This Clayton bashing is wrong he was playing well up to his injury in his first season here. And he has been far from our worst player this season. His age is catching up with him now but we have had far worse

 

Totally agree. Donaldson puts his aging body on the line game after game and never shirks. For effort he gets 100%, shame his legs have gone.

 

Best choice and a bit of a story behind it, Bradford lad from ball boy to club captain doesn’t happen to much in modern football.

 

Niall Canavan is a very astute choice by Adams.
Canavan is a very vocal individual with bags of experience and will rally those around him.
He's cuts a commanding figure at the back and certainly knows how to organise.
Pleased for him.
Personally I'm glad the captaincy as reverted back to an outfield player.

 

Not quite in the league of Fordy but I was a Director in the Travel Sector for many years so bought a nice house in leafy Surrey innit in 99 - but it didnt cost me too much back then! Now moved to the other side of Woking (Knaphill), half the size - and funnily enough where I have just moved from used to see Paul Weller quite a bit in the 'village'. Canavan shirks nothing and will keep players around him totally switched on. It's the type of captain we've needed for a long time. And ahead of him you have another leader in Songo'o who will be very vocal to the players in and around him. Andy Cook will be shouting all day for service. We've lacked leaders for a long time. Adams promotion successes have always included two or three players in defence, midfield and attack who are natural leaders.

 

And this is why you need an expert working on the transfers. Would previous regime have known that Canavan's contract was coming up in the Summer, he wasn't likely to be offered a new one and was playing at a club hundreds of miles away from his young family in West Yorkshire? Clever signing.

Reading the Plymouth fans forum it looks like we've signed a Rory McCardle type player. No nonsense/header/leader/talker. Not great technically, but good for the battles League 2.

A good addition by all accounts.

 

Solid signing, big vocal lad who leaves it all out on the pitch by all accounts. Exactly the type of character we need around the club, sounds a very McArdle-esque type of player which is fine by me, Bradford lad as well so there’s some personal pride and motivation for him. Played against him quite a few times in junior football strangely, was a big unit then too!

I’ve seen worse target-men pull on the famous Claret and Amber down the years - younger, too.

 

It has always annoyed me that some fans slag Clayton for effort. For me, he's a good pro who does the best he can. Yes, we signed him past his best years and his force is declining. But never knock him for effort. He still puts himself about as much as his body can cope with, and he still reads the game well. Novak and Clarke will particularly appreciate what he does for them.
