I'd agree with you on Akpan, didn't do enough but Butterfield can pick a pass but he needs people to move. There was just no movement in that team last year, with wingers and somebody who can get in behind and stretch a team I think we'd of seen a different player.

I don’t need to bring a filafax full of information to have an opinion on the player like some seem to think on here.

I trust my judgement from what I’ve seen and heard about him. He will be a fantastic/good/great signing

Akpan is never a defensive midfielder in a month of Sundays. People just presume he is because of his physique yet he was played as that player all of last season, often on his own. He's more of a box to box player but needs to be partnered with someone disciplined if he's to play that role.

Butterfield more often than not was played way too deep, infact at Walsall hopkin played him as a DM and at Oxford he played left wing. When he actually played as the furthest forward midfielder (posh at home, Charlton away) we saw a good player.

Fair play, maybe it was the system rather than the position then although I just think in Akpans case it's simply because he's not good enough.

Aye, I'm not sure he is either but Bowyer obviously rates him so maybe he'll come good.

We'll know soon enough how GB's recruitment will be.

I trust his judgement and so far we've made some decent
signings.Just get them all to gel and play for each other
    and I think we'll do ok.However, let's stop underestimating
ourselves, without being arrogant, forget play off's, aim for
    champions or automatic places!

I don't think it's a case of them insisting on it - the option is there so as a parent club, why wouldn't you have it? It doesn't mean they are going to use it.

The classic ‘can be recalled in January’ worry.

I’d imagine if he plays well, we are near the top of the league and have had a little cup run we would bid for him in January.

Have him and Akpan played together before? I get the feeling that Bowyer likes Akpan so let’s ‘Hope’ he’s better than last season

According to transfermarket he is more of a centre midfielder, so either a left sided player is also coming later OR a midfield trio of Anderson/Palmer/Akpan with one winger of either Scannell or Ismail.

Don't know if anyone saw but found this an interesting tweet on Matty's profile from David Sharpe. Just wondering why he commented when Matty never played for Wigan.

My issue with the loan system is the amount of players in teams squads, especially higher up. Teams don’t use loans to fill in temporary gaps like the days of old but to be main players for 30% of their first team

I look at Portsmouth last year and when they had midfielder Ben Thompson on loan from Millwall. He was recalled in January and they didn't replace him, they went from top of the league to losing in the playoffs. Now that wasn't the only reason, but it impacted them massively and in the end they didn't benefit from the loan agreement at all. This could easily happen to us in January and if Palmer performs well for us I'm certain it will happen, as even if Rotherham don't want him they will look to get a fee (even a small one) from another club and we get nothing.

Agree loans aren't always bad but this recall clause nonsense benefits nobody but the parent club.

And they were all full season loans, not six month rubbish.
