New kit

It doesn't impact you but you've decided it's not needed. Sometimes player numbers and names are the only way for colour blind people to tell the difference between players as the kits clash. It's also not just about fans but what about if a commentator or referee is colour blind.

 

As a colour blind ref, I’m only allowed to referee because our state rules for kits at high school level mean home team plays in plain dark shirts and away in plain white.
Not sure colour blind refs are allowed above a certain level though. Anyway, what was that silver thing we wore the other year with invisible white numbers? As for the stripes, I can’t remember not being able to see the numbers on our shirts.

and whats worse you are belittling people, and their troubles over a patch on the back of a shirt, do you wear yours back to front or something?

 

No, I had simply never considered that clearly seeing the numbers on players' backs was any kind of a big deal whatsoever.
If we are going down the road of inclusivity for colourblindness, it seems to me that there are far more important and effective stipulations to be made than forcing plain patches onto the backs of shirts, ie:
- Prohibiting away teams from wearing stripes/hoops if the home team is doing so.
- Prohibiting away teams (including keepers) from wearing yellow shirts if the home team is in blue (or vice versa). Same for potential red/green clashes.
Those measures would surely have far greater benefits for colour blind spectators than buggering up traditional striped shirts just because of the numbers. They're using a sledgehammer to crack a relatively insignificant nut whilst ignoring far bigger colourblind issues.

I don't and I imagine very few people do identify players by numbers. In the stand they're too small to tell when play is ongoing.

The real issue as per the image above is kit colour. It should always be designated dark/light. Then you can tell and the number is irrelevant so you could have any design on the back you wish.

 

Exactly. It's simple and should be included in league regulations that your home/away kits have to have that contrast so there's always am option. Job done.

 

How do you tell red from yellow ?


I would’ve thought seeing well would be a prerequisite of being a ref kinda like being able to swim if your a lifeguard

 

Assume the red is a disc & the yellow a rectangle.
And there are also colour blind players

 

My eyesight is piss poor as well. But seriously my colour blindness is rarely a problem but I am big enough to say that there are colour combinations that I would really struggle with. As it stands now we also have a middle school competition in my county where all the teams wear dark shirts. We have maroon, navy blue and dark green. I actually have to use shirt number colors or the school logo on the front or shorts design to tell between them.
As far as EFL goes, if they feel a solid panel on the back is helpful then fair enough.

 

Don’t see why the replica kits need the colour blind panel if that’s the case……

 

I guess because the club doesn't want to have to pay for two separate designs - one with the plain back panel and one proper striped shirt.

Short term thinking if that’s the case. One design for the players - dunno how many they go through a season, and one design for the fans of which they’ll sell thousands. I remember back in the day, players always had bespoke shirts with embroidered badges. Producing a fans shirt, is really no different than producing a fans polo shirt.

Never been one for asking peoples opinions with regards what I wear/wore if I liked it I bought it and wore it, some right head turners in the late 60s early 70, being of a certain age @Gateway38 I'm sure you remember.

I agree. I'm sure they'd sell far more striped or hooped shirts if they didn't have a horrible blank patch on the back. I don't think it's coincidence that last season's proper striped shirt sold in record numbers.

 

I'm colourblind too and that kit was horrific.

It's often not just also the colours but the way the colours are displayed, for example similar, complimentary colours on two kits when one is say stripes and another is halves/quarters can be really difficult to see the difference.

 

Its not a talent thing with Jake Young. I was told by a pretty reliable source there was a falling out behind closed doors which resulted in Young telling Hughes he was 'f**king clueless'. Young was very close to Kian Harratt who was also having problems with Hughes at the time.

No coming back from that unless he has been on his hands and knees and begged forgiveness.

What I was told, could be BS but would also make a lot of sense.
