Sometimes I find an Islay malt is just right, sometimes just overwhelming -- the problem lies in the drinker, not the whiskies. I've enjoyed Bunnahabhain and Caol Isla in the past; indeed I once had a Signatory Vintage series bottling of the 1981 Caol Isla. That was nice; long gone now. Still had the presentation "velvet" box it came in, until it got destroyed in last autumn's cellar flood...

My Lagavulin story. When I were a lad, still at home but of legal age, I had a bottle of Lagavulin. One evening we all had some; next morning, I could be found in the loo, noisily throwing up. Mum's comment was: "Couldn't you throw up quietly?" Later on that day, more such noises could be heard. Yes, it was Mum -- who had to admit then that no, she couldn't do it quietly either! It wasn't the whisky at all; we were all sickening for the flu. But ever since, I've been irrationally prejudiced against Lagavulin.

A very clever crossword clue for Absinthe:
    Sailors in the drink.

    Islanders who end in rebellion.

How civilised: sipping single malt whilst doing the crossword.

Bloody painkillers the doctor has me on means I can't drink, annoying with 4 cans of Kirkstall Virtuous in the fridge.

You’ll be better off with the painkillers if they play like Saturday

As I haven’t been able to get out, then I am lucky that a local brewery will deliver. ‘True Grit a very pale and hoppy strong ale. Well hopped using Chinook hops; a mellow bitter makes way for a distinctive citrus/grapefruit aroma’ @ 5% for the first half. I am then going for a Stout @ 4.5% for the second, made with ‘…English Phoenix and Goldings hops which provide a smooth bitterness as well as subtle hints of treacle in the aroma’. Both brewed by Millstone

I don’t like 1pm kick offs. Makes me feel guilty having a beer at 3pm.

Couple of cans of Boddingtons this afternoon. Nice and simple…hopefully like our football! 2B04375E-0399-4E15-98A7-97468DFB7270.jpeg

Same here... too early now at any rate -- breakfast just finished. But there's a selection of beers to choose from for the evening: Landlord, Bombardier, Jever, Czechvar, Ottakringer, Kilkenny.

Indeed. A good example of sticking to doing one thing, well. Must now get some more.

This thread should be retitled Match Drinks and Sick Bay... My contribution: a bad attack of sciatica, brought on by all the snow-shovelling of a few weeks ago. If we humans have been intelligently designed, then the designer was having a very bad day when it came to the back. I suspect the job was in fact outsourced, probably to some minor demon living on the outskirts of Hades. I wish to register a complaint!

In the meantime, more beer! And a few more City wins to drink them to.

Nice pint of Saltaire Blonde at half time last night in the BPA v York game.

Enjoyed in a thoroughly enjoyable game which York won 4-2. Seem OK those Park Avenue types!!
