I think as you say with our away form being as good as it was only those who followed us away saw the better performances, if the results/performances had been the other way around a lot of the discontent may not have been heard or seen at Valley Parade.

 

Well Crawley were up for it and they probably didn't even know their team mates names ........

 

They lost all memory after Uncle Derek gave them all ice baths to end with as a treat

Last season's squad was more than good enough in a poor league to get promoted
His negative tactics cost us last season and (including friendlies which are no yard stick) we are doing the same again trying to ram square pegs into round holes etc etc only this time we don't have the personnel and Cookie with the best will in the world won't hit 30 again, coupled with his seeming reluctance (as seen on Saturday) to change its no surprise a good few on here are concerned
Reluctantly I say give him 10 games (incl cup matches) see how he performs I reckon the VP atmosphere will be pretty toxic by then

 

We always seem to take ages to get match fit. I agree Crawley we’re eager to show that the rumours of their demise were untrue.

 

Well on the plus side, if things really do go t!ts up for them and they aren't able to fulfill all their fixtures, at least we won't have any points deducted.

This is the unfortunate nature of football fans. The need for instant gratification.

Roll back 2 years when Uncle Derek was in charge. He had been given a strong budget, lots of fan fare around his appointment and the team he was building. It was complete dross. The football was terrible, we were no where near where we expected to be, his poor relationship with the fans and the atmosphere unsurprisingly became toxic. Bye, bye Uncle Derek.

Roll forward 1 year. Hughes has a competitive budget, lots of positivity about his management, a very decent overhaul of the squad. Hughes was given the same support as Adams and guess what, it was completely different and we came ever so close to promotion.

For all the moaning about questionable line ups and in game tactical decision making, to get 76 points and be one of only 3 clubs fighting it out for 3rd spot as we went into the final week was massive progress.

Yes, promotion was the aim and we failed to achieve our main objective. Hugely disappointing, however, we improved - significantly - on every other aspect over previous seasons. How can fans not acknowledge this and see we have moved in the right direction under Hughes.

The transfer window remains open and new additions are likely to come in. Yes, parts of the squad needs strengthening and yes there have been a couple of iffy signings, but the team is not yet compete. Let things settle down and the team develop.

As I said at the beginning, the problem with football fans is the need for instant gratification.

 

I don't disagree with much of that Steve but he has to be given games, we'll have a good idea 10/12 games down the road then I believe fans will start making their voices heard, lets hope it doesn't come to that.

 

I wasn't happy with the game or our overall performance which was average at best, but I didn't think Crawley were any big shakes and I believed even a goal down we were capable of getting back into the game, unfortunately the lad Oyegoke getting a red didn't help, but even being unhappy (with the result) I wasn't calling for his head was I ?.

 

Also, let us not forget the decent start we made under Adams, or the poor start we made under Jewell and look where we eneded up in each of those respective seasons. (For those who can't remember, utter dross and lower mid table finish under Adams and automatic promotion to the Premier League under Jewell).

I've always said 15 games in and only then do you start to get a feel for where teams are likely to be come the end of the season. Patience is required.

 

A lot of what you say is correct regarding fans expectation and gratification. What I struggle with is other teams struggling one season and promoted the next. From a distance it looks like basic organisation and playing to the strengths of the squad, that seems to be the right formula. Hughes wasted the first 3 months or so persisting with a style of play which was alien to most of the side. All I wanted to see was a better version of last season, not the rip it up and start again that we saw on Saturday. Very early days but not the best of starts…

 

Funny, I kinda was looking forward to the meltdown if we lost against Crawley, I mentioned it to a few in the WhatsApp groups. But I didn't expect this level of faux outrage after one bloody game. I know our fans have an element of rage but this is crazy, Yes I'm always downbeat after a defeat but as Jimmy says it need 12/15 games before either things start falling into place or we seek clarification from management about where the club is heading.

 

Brought it up after Crawley and I will bring it up again.

I was amazed as anyone when he was appointed but time to fall on your sword Mr Hughes you have been well backed but still cannot get a good 90 minutes out of your team
