We can show respects in our own way.
I’ll respect her as an elderly lady, member of a family who has sadly passed away.
But I do not believe that respect should come at the cost of individuals and businesses being impacted unnecessarily.
What are we to do, sit and watch BBC repeatedly showing the same tales and stories continually?
One should have the choice - and I completely respect if you don’t want to attend football, or concerts or watch comedy shows but it shouldn’t be forced upon people.

I guess the extent to which people are upset about the cancellation of matches will correlate quite strongly with how attached they are to the monarchy or, specifically, the Queen.
Although I'm 66, so have been around for every decade of the Queen's reign, I've never understood why people get so emotional about the idea of monarchy or the Queen herself.
She was clearly a hard working and honest woman who did her very best for the country, but the role she played is, to me and many others, an anachronism in this day and age. When I see people in tears because a mega rich woman who was born into power and privilege, and whom most people have never met, has died, it completely baffles me.
I'm happy for people who want to mourn, by not attending public activities like football matches, to do so. I'm also happy to observe a minute's silence before kick off as a mark of respect. But for the life of me I can't see why it is necessary, or what is to be gained, by calling off fixtures other than on the day of her funeral.

I watched Thatcher's funeral just to make sure she was dead. She was evil.

Good. She was an icon and we need to show the respect by cancelling all non essential events, and that includes sporting events. The longest serving Queen ever has died, it's quite right that the country should pause and reflect.

    Absolute joke!!!
Too many do gooders in the world today forcing their ideals on everyone.
Yes the queen died , it’s sad but the period of mourning shouldn’t be enforced upon everyone.
For many people their only outlet after working all week is going to sporting events. Who’s gonna take care of their mental health when now they have to cancel all their plans and potentially sit at home doing nothing

A minutes silence would be a sufficient appropriate response in my view..

It was done in haste. They made a decision to postpone on the morning after the Queen's death. Other sports waited to test the wind and decided to carry on.
The guidelines allow sport to continue. The FA and EFL have gone well beyond what the guidelines require.
The test match was pushed back one day, but will still go the full duration. And it's the last Test so it didn't impact on other matches. That's very different from taking out a whole weekend's football in a schedule that is already rammed to the gills because of the world cup.
As others have said, it would have been much more sensible to allow games to go ahead with appropriate tributes/silence etc beforehand. That shows appreciation far better than sitting at home or going shopping because there's no games to watch.

Steady on USG. There are many of us on the broad left who are fully behind our unique constitution, who despise wokery and who voted for Brexit. All of which has nothing whatsoever to do with the decision to postpone football this weekend which was decided by the football authorities. Some people think this was the wrong decision but it's really nothing to do with right and left.

You've reached the poster known as Ulysses S Grant. I'm sorry he is currently unavailable due to observing a respectful period of mourning following the death of our long standing and exceptional monarch. Please leave a message and he will get back to you on his return.

It's a fair comment. I know only too well what steucture brings to certain people's lives, I currently recieve help for trying to take my own life a few times in the last few years. Football is a welcome disraction to my struggles as is the banter with people on here. If it comes across as an attack on how much emphasis football plays in others life's then I apologize, I've just learnt as I get older that to myself there are far more important issues I personally have to deal with than 22 blokes kicking around a football.

It is very sad. She was an admirable woman who epitomised public service. She was important to many people. She was 96, so her death was inevitable sooner rather than later. A 10 day period of mourning and this sort of TV coverage and postponement of normal activity belongs to a bygone age in my view. Yes, we should show our respect by all means, but a bit OTT I think.

My family. The health and care of others around me. My ability to earn money to put food on the table. Now this is only my opinion but i'm sure the postponing of a football match hasn't led to anyone having a mental health breakdown. It may cause some discomfort for some regarding travel plans and the like but i'm pretty sure they will live.

For a rational adult, it is only a football match, yes. But some less fortunate suffering mental health issues, having that weekend escape like Loyal says, it is important in their routine.

Don’t underestimate the importance of routine. Lockdown has messed up a lot of kids mentally and disrupting their routines is awful for the families involved.

This forum prob not the place to discuss it, but I think Loyal makes a fair point. It can go much deeper than the simple frustration of missing a match, having a match abandoned.

I’ll tell you this. Kids in our district have to wait two and a half years for certain mental health assessment. Two and a half years. NHS is in tatters. Going to the football can be one of the few places these troubled souls find a ‘happy’ place where they are relaxed.

it sounds trivial to many, but mental health is a horrible thing to deal with. Makes sensible people do crazy things - you look them in the eye and all seems fine, but they can be so messed up upstairs. The brain is dangerous.

By cancelling the games, thousands of football fans have been denied the chance to show their respects en masse. We will have to leave it to the rugby fans to do it for us.

Sadly, I'm missing the Mansfield game, because I'm in purdah ahead of my daughter's wedding on 22nd September. Due to Covid and other illness it's been postponed three times since 2020. So nothing must be allowed to stop it happening this time. So, however small the risk of getting Covid, I'm in isolation for two weeks.
As well as Mansfield, I'll miss the Stevenage home game and also the Wimbledon game the day after the wedding :D

My son then gets married at the end of October - after two postponements due to Covid. I bloody hope I've had the booster jab before then so I'm not missing any more games.
