It was always going to be a low attended match, Shrewbury has a population of 70,000 so will never take a big about especially as this is their 4th trip to the new Wembley and only went a few months ago so like we found last year the day trippers get bored after 1 or 2 visits and they don't see play off matches as big ones to go to. Rotherham have average over 10k home attendances twice since 1970 and that's when they were in the championship so the reality is they only have 9k home fans at best when they were in the championship. They've also been to Wembley before so that'll knock a few thousand off their attendance. Rotherham also suffer in the same way as we do with trying to attract fans as a lot tend to go for the more established clubs like the Sheffields.

There are more clubs in the Championship recieving parachute payments than there are in league 1.

There is more and more money coming into the championship and it’s filtering down Wigan last year Sunderland this there is no way average league clubs can compete with them

Other than Sunderland in the forthcoming season, which clubs have come down to Div 1 still receiving parachute payments from their time in the PL?

Edit - Somebody did post that Wigan were still receiving parachute payments but it transpires that was incorrect.

Wrong. Their parachute payment stopped in the year when they were relegated from the Championship.

So which clubs other than Sunderland have received parachute payments when in Div 1?

The reality is that there is more and more money filtering into Div 1 from the pockets of their owners! And that's a lesson that our owners certainly have to learn.

It's worse in the Championship. Next season only Sunderland are going recieve parachute payments in league 1. How many are there in the Championship? There'll be a bare minimum of 3 every season.

Parachute payments are received for 2 seasons, following on from relegation from Premiership.

    Wolves?

You would need back to back relegations to get the parachute payments in League 1?

They were still benefiting from it which is why with the small gates they get they have the money they have. The point is the championship is getting richer with better players than most other leagues other than the premiership and my point stands it is harder these days to progress.clubs like Sunderland Blackburn and Wigan have more resources than most league one clubs

They certainly do progress and mainly because of their large playing budgets. But other than Sunderland, the reason for their success has nothing to do with continuing to receive parachute payments and everything to do with their owners choosing to fund them.

The owners of Blackburn have been well criticised for not putting money in they have sold a lot of good players so have Wigan.

Park, Blackburn were able to spend £750k in transfer fee, and pay huge wages for League 1's best player in Bradley Dack last summer. The vast majority of clubs in our league could only dream about spending like that

Most football clubs take a hit and a gamble.

We could do a Blackburn but lack fight and ambition. It's simple really.

Agree Fordy. I think the majority of us were expecting the current owners to come in and finance a real go at promotion to Championship, something Lawn and Rhodes were open to admit that they couldnt, or wouldnt do. However, its clear now that the owners are not prepared to speculate, but try and do it on the cheap.

I have to apologise to you. Wigan did indeed receive parachute payments in 15/16 when they were promoted. But they are the only club to have ever done that.

The BDO report prepared for the EFL concluded that over 70% of all Div 1 clubs were funded by their owners and that there was only 1 example of a promoted team from Div 1 not to have been funded in the 5 years of their review. I'm guessing that Yeovil was the one exception.
