Think he's set to replace Gerrard as Under 18's manager at Liverpool.

How do you know? No one could have a plan B because who could second guess which managers were available. Take into account the advertising and interview process even BEFORE contracts are negotiated, at a bare minimum one recruit would take a month quite easily. So we need patience. If it’s not concluded by 6th June THEN we criticise ?

Having a plan b doesn't mean you have a ready made alternative already lined up but it does mean when you sign a manager on a very short term contract, you are savvy enough to put the needs of the football club before the needs of the manager. I'm disappointed we didn't sit Grayson down a couple of weeks before the end of the season when we knew there was nothing to play for and lay the deal on the table then. We should have told him this is how it is going to be, if you can work with it then make a commitment to the club and sign up now, if not, then thank you very much and see you later at the end of the season. I think that was a mistake (as was agreeing to a short term deal in the first place), and hopefully it is one they have learnt from.

I do understand what you are saying but how do we know they didn’t sit down with SG before the season end. Remember he signed up for he remainder of the season. How many “suitable” managers were willing and able to sign a say two year deal instead of signing SG? Surely they did right just to see who becomes available at season end. Perhaps that was their plan B, mistake or not?

I'm sure they did sit down with him before the end of the season but the fact that they were still sitting down with him after the end of the season suggests does it not that no decision was made in those earlier meetings? Maybe Grayson gave them false hope that he would sign and they naively believed him (and this is where the learning bit hopefully comes in), but if he wasn't willing to make a proper commitment when he signed, and was still dragging his feet a few months later, surely that should have sent out alarm bells? I don't agree with you that they 'did right' by signing Grayson until the end of the season , just to see who would become available then and that certainly wasn't Edin's plan when he signed Grayson as he wanted him for the very long term.

Paul Warne. Not a name known in management. In his first job. Gets Rotherham promoted. OK, probably had a decent budget but still, it needed doing.

So, again, I'll say who cares if our new man isn't a big, well known name, it's what they do with us that counts less than what they've achieved so far.

Paul Warne was at Rotherham for many years first as a player then on the coaching staff, when Kenny Jacket was sacked Warne took over as caretaker manager and then given the job permanently, so he had a pretty good inside knowledge of all things Rotherham.
But yes big name manager/coach does not guarantee successes to the club, and over the years rookie managers have served Bradford City pretty well, McFarland, Cherry, Dolan, Kamara, Jewell

Do you remember Bobby Kennedy as well @Bronco@Bronco ,promoted from youth coach in 1975. In his first full season we reached quarter final of FA cup and he got us promoted in his next season. Sadly all went wrong following season and we were relegated.

All 3 of last season's clubs relegated from the championship, promoted. All 3 will have had the biggest budgets in the league, or thereabouts.

    Money talks.

The championship is becoming disconnected from us. It'l get harder and harder to get there without extra money being put in.

Totally agree. If I could fine a site that would do the number crunching I would attempt to prove the point; at some point the dozy bunch down in London otherwise known as the EFL might like to take notice. If L1/2 become non competitive due the widening gap, then crowds and attendance in the lower leagues will drop off dramatically, clubs going out of business etc. There reason to exist might also disappear, ah that might get their notice.

I fear this will become the norm. You'll have the odd club where the owners invest heavily. The rest will probably follow our plan and hope to sell the odd player just to survive.

The longer it takes to get promoted, the harder it will be.

Money is ruining the game. Fans are starting to vote with their feet. I see more and more empty seats at games, in all divisions. Even allowing for the fact that they'e fairly small clubs, an attendance of 26k for yesterday's playoff final is pathetic.

At the highest level, some of the football Man City play is sensational - but what's happened there and at PSG, is criminal. Clubs being bankrolled by entire states. Inflated TV deals driving extortionate salaries with little to no subsidisation back to fans.

The massive 'parachute' payments offered to clubs distorts the landscape further.

The whole thing has become unbalanced.

Just news on another old City player, Alan Dowson, who was a left back with us for a season or two in the early 90's (i think) - has just been appointed as manager at Woking FC where I live. Had a quick chat with him last week and he remembers his time with us fondly even though he only made about 20 appearances - he is a very honest, humble and friendly man with a very, very strong north east accent!

I agree with this money has brought some great players to our shores but as a competition it no longer exists gone are the days where a well run club could climb the league ladder. It’s almist as hard now to get out if league one as it is to get into the premiership itself. A financial crash could be the best thing to happen long term

Unfortunately the Premiership clubs hold all the aces in English football and things won't change.
I most cases gone are the days of the local busnessmen being chairman/owner, its become a rich mans play thing.
