Absolutely, one of the best natural wing backs ( wing half's) i have seen at City was Bruce Stowell which is a rarity these days, weather its the coaching or todays managers formation who knows but apparently these days its one of the most difficult positions to cover.

5 of the misses you mentioned were loans, majority 'squad fillers' so very low risk as not stuck with them - did any of them last a season apart from Dion? Plus Hendrie wasn't even signed by Hughes - that was Derek Adams in January 202 so doesn't even fall under the last 12 months. Id also say East was a low risk, 'squad filler'. Did anyone expect anything else from someone released by Swindon with about 17 league appearances to his name?

The only 'bad signings' for me out of that crop are Odusina, Osadebe, Young and Oliver.

Fair point on the 'done ok' lot - they aren't hits but far from poor signings too.

Its very early days but Pattison, Oduor and Smith look like very capable signings so far. I will wager McDonald will become an asset too.

Hendrie was given a 2 year extension by Hughes and has hardly featured for us since. You could argue Sutton and Foulds being given new 2 year deals wasn't the best bit of business we did either.

Well like everyone of us I sincerely hope he is a cracking player. Wolves might be returning the favour as we sold them the Late Great Dean Richards. I know he had to go as he was too good for us, but I loved watching him play. So now we have Lewis. The club have kept this very much under wraps which is good to see. MH damping down expectations in his interviews gives the hungry greedy agents heading in the wrong directions, well done City.

Absolutely, but Rides isn’t Vince. One could leap, one couldn’t.

That’s like comparing Norman Corner with Tony Leighton Silver?

Today he would have been classed as a DM though Vlad , because he didn’t play down the sides.
The old “wing back” was no where near todays wingback role. Completely different formations.

The squad needs back up players. Jewell and Parkinson had them as well.

If we are going to mention players given contract extensions then is Cook classed as a 'signing'?

I'd say he's classed as a good bit of business, in the same way other contract extensions or signings are classed as not so good bits of business. I agree with you that all squads need back up players, but when you consider the likes of Hendrie, Sutton, Young, Odusina, Bola, Nevers, Costelloe, Harrett, Pereira, that's collectively a lot of money wasted on players that would not have been missed had they never signed.

No idea whether this lad is any good or not but I watched a video where Rob Edwards, who was his academy manager at wolves, described him as a ball playing CB. That's quite a transition to LWB if that's where we're planning on playing him.

Loans are still a key transfer tool. You can't really exclude them when judging recruitment, especially at this level. If you do, you have to remove Wright, Banks, Crichlow from the hits too.

Height isn't the defining issue when it comes down to how good a player is in the air. Take Lisandro Martinez an Diego Jota for example. Romain Vincelot was quality for us for a season. Liam Ridehalgh could be 6ft an would still be shit in the air, he can't head a ball. I saw his resigning as a backup option, someone to use as cover. Im glad to see that finally coming to fruition as he doesn't suit either the LCB or LWB position

Completely agree. Ridehalgh isn’t great in the air, but he’s positionally sound and decent on the ball. I think he’d do ok on the left of the 3. TO be honest though, it wouldn’t be my chosen system and if it is, we need better.

So by what mechanism is the players value linked to their wages then?

That immediately allows Wolves to reinvest/sign another young player on the same contract, knowing that contract is covered in perpetuity, completely.

contracts are not trading cards and to assume that even academy players have template contracts is silly. Each academy player has a specific value tied onto the club and are paid accordingly.

they have already saved the wages as he has left the club, so would extra money be needed to cover the contract if they have already saved the wages?

They have already saved the club paying the wages but then pay wolves his wages twice only to the club?

So they can “cover” his contract for another player.

    What?

Development fees can be settled by a tribunal that take into account the money spent developing the player. If wolves spent a lot of money developing him Ie stayed at wolves for a while it would be a high fee. (I do think he left Brentford in 2019 so would be smaller fee I presume.)

you are saying I misinterpreted what you said but I think you misunderstood what you actually said.

I thought the lad did OK on his debut with two great crosses into the area.

Looked ok today but it was evident he hadn't played with any of the lads before. My only concern is that he looks very lightweight and got bullied by Bloxham all game

I thought he was just getting into his stride, had a great 10 minutes where he looked most likely to create something and put in a few crosses ........ So Hughes took him off.

His agent is probably checking to see if there is a "cooling off" clause in the contract

I think the lad looks promising. He gets a free pass as far as I am concerned. You can’t assess him properly until everyone else is playing their part.
