My point is, is it ok to laugh at someone because of their gender or skin colour? No. That’s not thinking before you laugh, it’s simply not being an arse. I don’t see how that’s a difficult concept to grasp.

 

Times change thankfully, most move with it, while others get left behind and more alienated.

 

And others cant laugh because we may offend someone.....i preferred it 20-30 years ago. At least then folk had a choice either way. Now the pitch forks and lanterns are out, jobs are lost and folk are ridiculed on social media. Even a knock at the door...

 

Sadly, too many of them are getting elected these days.

 

You can laugh at whatever ya like, just don't play victim when you're called out on shitty behaviour.

 

The people making the racist, sexist, homophobic etc jokes, and those laughing at those jokes, had a choice. But the disadvantaged groups who were the butt end of those jokes, did not.

Social tolerance of those jokes served to prolong the prejudicial attitudes underpinning them and exacerbated the discrimination of those groups.
Some people who are not in any of those groups, and who don't care whether disadvantaged groups are discriminated against, are happy to carry on with the prejudicial jokes and resent the fact that they get called out for making or laughing at them. I'm not saying that applies to you but it certainly does to many.

 

But you're not very likely to be on the butt end of those jokes, are you? It's easy to be 'not offended' if the jokes don't affect you.

 

All comedy is inappropriate in some shape or form. If we believe in free speech, we have to believe in the right to risk offending someone.

 

Nor do I. It's possible to make gender based jokes that don't belittle people.

 

The BBcC put warnings on a lot of their historical content incase some snotty nosed student goes hysterical at hearing something they dont like.

They have sanitised alot of historical content. Takes me back to the Pogues and Kirsty McColl. Folk crying because it uses the word 'Faggott'. How pathetic.

 

You give them far too much credit and that's the problem. Satire is a dying art in the easy to be offended society. In the easy to be offended the person being offended holds all the cards, even if the original 'joke' had satirical leanings. I'm offended therefore you are in the wrong.

Surely someone calling a person who is shouting ridiculous outdated, sexist comments towards women, a prick, is completely justified?

 

BBC have an equalities advisor on £237, 000 or so a year for 3 days work a week, Now that is a bad joke,

You don't think these would be taboo?

Of course the whole film is satire and it's narrative on racism is actually cutting and amazing...."You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons"....is an great line to underpin the whole ethos of the project, as is the one about the Irish when they're building the town. As a young boy it probably taught me more about the stupidity of racism than anything at school.

But if you think the two clips that I've found (and a hell of a lot more!) would fly now or aren't taboo then I don't know what to say.

 

That audience would be very niche and would have probably been ostracised on social media as being 'gammon' or 'Brexit voting racists'. Today's society doesn't do satire very well, it doesn't fit the social media narrative of today of completely ignoring any forms of context.

 

The fact that BBC removed Little Britain, something written by two of the most politically correct people going who then felt pressured into apologising for it shows that people can make any argument they want but most classical comedy even though much of it was written by liberal writers wouldn’t be accepted today. I can’t think of any genuine funny modern sitcom or movie, Satire is a dying art.

 

One of those many so called comedians at football matches who think they are funny without anyone actually laughing.
