Think the EFL tinkered the loan rules during the pandemic as they planned the return of football.

I read a piece online that suggested its five loans max at any one time now, with a cap of four from any one club. Can’t find the link though!

 

The only one which has worked out for us in 20+ years from non-league is Hanson.

It's very rare we as a club get it right. I hope he signs and scores 20 odd goals but can't see it.

Another Lewis Clarkson, Ross Hannah, Jake Speight, Dave Syers, Lachlan Barr I reckon but happy to be proved wrong if he signs for a league club and does well.

 

My memory has Dave Syers in the positive column, Lachlan Barr was a Rahic signing, the other two did ok of sorts before and after City.
Like @Faithful Bantam said, we should be looking at these players, whether the scouting and coaching infrastructure is there to get the best out of them is another question.

 

I don't mind taking gambles on players like Knight so long as they're properly scouted and analysed.

However, non league players and young loans cannot be the bulk of our business this window. We need a few players between 26-28 who are experienced and in their prime to walk straight into the first team.

Relying on young, unproven players is a reason we're in this mess in the first place.

 

Ian Ormondroyd £650,000 to Aston Villa all those years ago, what would that be equivalent to in today's transfer market.

 

We did we had 6 loanees, Bowyer inherited that situation from Hopkin.Your only allowed 5 loans in a match day squad and Bowyer usually left out Paudie O,Conner and used our other 5 loan players in the squad.

 

I think that's a reflection of our scouting, rather than the talent that's there.

Carlisle - top of the League. Jon Mellish with 7 goals from Midfield, signed from Gateshead just over a year ago.
Crawley - Max Watters on 13 goals, played nearly all of his football before this season at NL or lower.
Danny Johnson - Played non League until he was 23/24.

In fact, if you look at the Top Scorer list for League 2, there's plenty of non-league representation.

 

Add Simon Francis to the list. Not exactly non league but was playing for the local Nottingham University at the time.

 

That's true but didn't Ross Hannah score 60 in 80 or something daft.

I hope it works out though, i love nothing more than non-league players coming through the leagues. Sadly it doesn't happen a lot for us, so it would be good to see if we can make something work.

It doesn't always work, granted. But I think the fundamental problem has been our scouting and coaching capability. With the exception of a period under Parkinson, we just don't seem to make players better. Either players perform poorly, or they start brightly and fade. Its happened for years, across many different managers.

 

Hate to have to like this but so far this is the City path in January.
They will still end up spending nowhere near the salary cap, so much for ambition.
Going to be fun selling the season tickets for next season.

Lets hope the improvements to Paudie and Levi are a sign that with T & S in charge, we’ve bucked this trend.

 

Its a promising early sign. It does need to be continued over a much longer period though. We have a number of young players in this squad and I think most have the potential to be good lower league players. It needs to come together under the right management team and with the right leaders in the squad - and I do worry that we're lacking in senior pro's with strong leadership ability. Parkinson had Davies, McArdle, Darby, Jones, Hanson, Ravenhill. We don't really have a single player from that ilk now.
