Pope is way past his best, he was good back in 2013 when he scored about thirty goals in league two, now I don't think he'd be an improvement on Donaldson.

 

Certainly not in terms of goals.

Port Vale player through and through, can't see why he would leave unless he simply wasn't part of the plans anymore.

Tom Pope was carrying about fifteen stone under his shirt when he jogged on last week. Not sure an old head can compensate for tired knees and a beer belly

In terms of target men he's not ever been at James Hansons level.

Only hit double figures five times in 16 seasons of pro football, aged 35 and averages 9 goals a season over a long career, not good enough for what we need. His scoring record averages 3 a season more than Guthrie

 

Looking at Guthrie's record, and taking into account the rumour that Stuart knew he coming back to the club and asked us to sign him (based on Bowyer having said he hadn't signed him, and the first he knew was when he saw it on the internet) then he should have been sacked for the delusion of thinking Guthrie was worth a punt. Six goals a season, and most of those in non league. Even Kai has a better record than that.

 

But lets be honest - a straight swap for Guthrie and we would take it.

46 goals vs 20 goals in the last 3.5 seasons which is probably a fair measure on 'recent years'.

 

You could look at it another way Guthrie scored 14 in 38 for Stevenage whilst Doyle scored 11 in 49 for us

 

Why swap one ineffective striker for another? Especially if the other is an overweight 35 year old? It doesn't make sense.
