Good post s.i.s. In James' case I heard his G.L. was 6 months and I think he is unlikely to be out of work for long

Wow - a six month notice period is a long one, but I have no idea how standard that is in executive football positions.

Looks like he is being very productive at the moment so can't imagine him being out of work for long.

Very well put. I have been involved in a 'few' of these situations, one personally.
Circumstances prevail above all, and things can become slightly complicated - Thus my reluctance to post more than I did. :) I'd rather admit my ignorance, than scribe anything which would serve to make me look a fool.

I would have thought 6 months would be fairly standard for COO level. We have had a new COO start the other week, he ‘left’ his previous role 6 months previous and he didn’t come from a competitor.

It does have an end date. 6th December when his 6 month notice ends.

Interesting. I'm not quite at COO level yet and my notice is 3 months (increased from 1 month when I was promoted to a more senior role). I suspect the general rule is the more senior you get the longer the notice period, however football clubs of our size are not really comparable to other businesses of their size and turnover. They don't have as much middle management and the majority of the high expenditure is on non-executive staff so will have their own nuances I suspect.

Cool - in which case he may very well be on gardening leave as opposed to a restraint of trade or confidentiality agreement. He may have agreed a combination of the three, meaning even after the gardening leave expires he wont be able to say anything.

My Mrs is on 3 months currently and there was discussion before she got pregnant of them moving her on to 2 years. Suppose it all depends on business and what is needed to replace them.

My last job was 3 months notice, but I always put that down to it being a smaller firm so they found it hard to recruit decent management.

That can’t be true Storck. @Silverbantam@Silverbantam claims she was blocked for “mouthing off”. How can she mouth off, yet told nothing yet?

Are you saying Edin (sorry, I meant Silver) is wrong

All the senior people where I am are on 6 month notice periods. Not uncommon now.

Usually 6-12 months in senior positions and often a non compete clause to stop you going to a direct competitor within a certain time frame after that.

What I don’t understand is if he resigned, why is he on gardening leave? When you resign you give notice whatever that is, so if it is a long notice and written into your contract and your employer doesn’t want you around for obvious reasons, surely it would be better to pay up the notice period? Why would James agree to sit at home?

I would happily agree to sit at home for 6 months if my boss was paying me.

It could be for any number of reasons, if there’s a risk an employee would go to another similar company you may want to keep them away from confidential information, you may fear they may be a disruptive influence, you may not like them or you may not like their work and want them out. If their notice period spans two accounting periods you may not want six months salary in your current year’s accounts and so on.

Thank you for that explanation, interesting. Surely trying to keep someone subdued or prevent them from going elsewhere will make them even more disgruntled surely?
