If only. Easily our most talented player in years. If he was in McCall’s team we would have got promoted

 

If we stay up, I’d make Payne number one priority to sign. He is immense. His skill in the second half just reminded me of Robbie Blake

 

Abbott was hopeless.

 

I think its an annoying mark of Huddersfield's progression. When they brought Payne in a couple of years ago, he would have fit right in there as a low end Championship / high end L1 player which is where Huddersfield were. Here we are now and Huddersfield are very much a low end Premier League / high end Championship club.

Payne is one of a final few players that are still on the coattails of that progression - the rest were gone in the summer and some of them we are familiar with i.e. Hiwula, Scannell. You just can't see a future for Payne there, especially after a period playing for L1's bottom club. We all know he could easily do well back at that high L1 / low end Championship level though.

If there is interest at a decent price then Huddersfield will probably sell. I'd like to think we are in a position to try and complete the move permanently but being where we are means others could easily step in ahead of us. Lewis O'Brien on the other hand, we could be in a good position with him with the promise of first team football.

 

Maybe a £250k plus a sell on would do the trick?

 

I don’t think we can wait. If we are not in for Payne, be it he has told us he won’t sign permanently or we can’t afford him, we need someone in at start of the window as Hopkin stated last week.

If not the first thing I’d do is recall McCarten in January 1st. We are in a dire position and can not afford to be a player down and chasing to sign a replacement

McCarten not ideal given his performances first time around but may be a player with some confidence who can get us through a sticky spell

McCartan cost quarter of a million pounds.

Repeat: quarter of a million pounds.

 

He was an absolute shambles.

That's why he got so upset and defensive when someone suggested it.

I wonder if his response would be different with hindsight.

 

We could probably afford the transfer fee, not sure what wages he would be on or want. However, I think all irrelevant anyhow, as I suspect he will have better options than joining a team possibly destined for league 2

By far and away our player of the season so far, never understood some fans wanting him dropped earlier in the season

 

Also depends if he wants to move. He might sit out the season to get himself a better deal at end of the seaso

 

They hardly used him when they were in the Championship and he is now playing for a bottom league 1 club.

He isn't a championship level player as yet and has 6 months left on his contract.

If a decent offer comes in then they will sell.

 

Agree that defence is the priority, but if we lose some or all of our loan players in Jan then everywhere else becomes a priority too. I do hope that now the players look to be enjoying playing together, it is an encouragement for them all to want to stay with us

 

And I can not see him wanting to stay

 

The only time I would recall McCarten is if we go down to Div 2 as that's his level.

Going from Payne to McCarten is just a massive backwards step. The club has taken far too many backwards steps hence why we're bottom of the league.

 

So the short answer was, er, NO then?

 

Huddersfield were wanting £500k plus last summer and no one came him for Payne so we got him on loan. I can't see them getting £500k in jan with 6 months left may be half that. Can we afford that and would he want to come on a perm deal?.

 

What a waste of money that was.

He might as well stay with Hudders and play in the Championship next season

 

Am I missing something here? We have signed Jack Payne on a season-long loan. If Hudders want him back in Jan, both clubs have to agree - and I can’t see us even considering it.
