Forget points tallies, it’s different every season. We’ll be out the relegation zone come Saturday with a win so let’s get behind the boys and take us out of there.

As many as possible. Never ever understood the expected point tally to survive. Teams should aim to have as many as possible. Simple as that.

We need six wins. 51 points. Got to be realistic, it ain’t likely. If we don’t win on Saturday I think that we’re pretty much down. If we can’t beat Walsall at the moment then I don’t see us winning six games elsewhere.

We need about 52 points I would of thought.

You're missing the point. There's an average number of points needed to survive the drop based on the figures taken from past season. Obviously teams are aiming to have as many points as possible...

Agree. Fleetwood and Plymouth should have given us 2 points minimum. However it was the performances that were most concerning (excluding Plymouth second half). We have to continue the way we finished our last game into Saturday at Walsall.

Clearly we all would like City to get another 39 points!

But we live in the real world, there is probably more chance of winning the Euro Lottery than that occurring.

The thread was created to identify a number of points which is likely to see the club achieve safety.

If you look at @StaffordBantam@StaffordBantam analysis, which suggests 48, yet others like @wetherbywhaler@wetherbywhaler have suggested 54.

Personally I think 51 should be sufficient. I think only 1 team since the creation of League 1 has been relegated with that number (waits to be corrected by @River_City_Bantam@River_City_Bantam ;)).

Just trying to get a view and why.

This team won't reach 50 points. Imo

Roll on next season and a relaxing break from football.

No, you're right: Torquay in 04/5 went down on 51. Milton Keynes, also on 51, were saved by Wrexham having 10 points deducted. Several teams have gone down with 50, but no more. (Orient, on 51, were saved in 06/7 by Rotherham having 10 points deducted.)

Based on the third tier as League One, then true enough, 50/51 will usually do it. But you know I'll happily argue with you forever that we should look back over a longer period, if not over the whole history of the third tier then at least over the whole era since 81/2, when 3 points for a win came in. That makes me prefer a higher target.

For what it's worth, I voted for 52 points in the poll. I don't think my worst-case scenario of needing 55 will happen, but I do think there will be a crowd right around 50.

Bit bored so had a go, definitely safe with 50, i’ve got 48 as safe. Top end, think 93 will be needed at least for 2nd.

I don't get what your reply is getting at, purely because I want my team to get as many points as possible, instead of aiming for a target which ultimately could still be short of the requirement.

The worrying part for me is that three of that bottom four last season went down. This season is different and almost unique versus many of the previous in that it’s so tight right up till 16th place, however we won’t be the only club needing form to get out of this.

Based on this seasons trend I seriously worry 54 will be needed. 21 points more than we have now and at least three games coming up after Saturday where I struggle to see us getting more than a point. That’s why this Saturday is so important.

That said, if we can play well and kept confident in the big three games, nick more than a point and take that into the Oxford game, things could look a lot better.

This is the table in 2016 for the corresponding date. Although fewer games for some, the points accumulated is comparable and from 17th to 22nd there are just 4 points in it. Both Shrewsbury on 50 points and Oldham on 54 points survived. Shrewsbury got into the Play Offs the following season. Doncaster were in 21st place on 46 points.

seeing that table i forgot that we only missed the polay offs by a point! and even though we went on such a bad run all it needed was 1 win towards the end!!

we were actually 9 points clear in the top 6 when at one point and edin didnt back McCall and sacked him! then went on his few months of absolute insanity!! that guy was such a disaster, wow!!

anyway i think its only gonna be wimbledon, walsall, rochdale, and either gillingham or oxford who go down..
