How would it have helped them had Ghana scored the penalty as you would have expected them to?

There is nothing positive about a red card, no matter how cynical an example you can find. It's basic kids stuff

 

The ball would have ended up in the goal had Suarez not handled and Uruguay would have been out. As it was they missed the penalty and Uruguay held on to win the game on penalties.
