McCall 16/17..unbeaten but 12 draws from 23... Did it cost us automatic promotion?

We were never catching Sheffield United that season and we finished too far behind Bolton so I’d say no.
However we should have beaten both at home.

Does anybody remember the climax to the 1964/65 season? We had a good chance of promotion with two games to go and were at home to Workington. A win was considered a formality and would make us favourites to go up. The old ground was bursting at the seams with 18,000 in. Needless to say we lost 2-0, then lost the last game against York so missed out on promotion.

Until we have players from the defence and midfield contributing goals, we are more ruthless from set piece free kicks and corners to help break teams down at VP we will struggle to make it a fortress.

    Think you might be mistaken.
You got me looking through old programs and we didn’t play Workington that year

Brighton, Fulham, Bournemouth and Brentford spent plenty of time in the lower division

A lot closer than you think from Bolton, just 7 points. Hang on against Bolton when 2-0 up at half time reduces that to 4 points then so many dropped points in home draws against the likes of Bury, Oldham, Gillingham and failing to see out wins at Fleetwood and Scunthorpe when leading in both games. We came so close to automatic promotion that season. Played lovely football that season though, been watching the 16/17 season highlights on u tube and it shows how far we’ve slumped since then.

What's even more noticeable as well as the teams currently not in the EFL is the number of teams relegated and come back up
Brighton used to be a good away trip and @Polo-Bantam@Polo-Bantam mentioned Bournemouth as a lower league team I can remember us slamming 8 passed them at Valley Parade

And we finished19th in the league. I think he might mean 1967/68 when we finished 5th.

I think it was 1963/64 season mate, I was in the Bradford End that night with the gang, if my memory serves me well it was a Wednesday night game when you played all our midweek home game on a Wednesday night, one of many disappointment's during my early days of watching Bradford City.
Rodney green had scored 29 goals that season and the team had won more games than any other team in the league, unfortunately not that night.

Average home attendance in 63/64 was 11,500.
When I started attending regularly in the early to mid 70's the attendances were much lower 3 -4,000 ish , I wonder why such a drop in support when playing at the same level?

I was in the Bradford End too. Such was the late crush of fans at the turnstiles, they were letting some late comers enter the ground through the offices and they streamed along the track surrounding the pitch trying to find a spot on the terraces which to squeeze into. So much for Health and Safety!

I think Workington scored playing towards the Bradford End the ball trickling over the line I seem to remember if packed Bradford End had blown the ball would not have crossed the line.

I'll never forget the big FA cup ties against Everton and Burnley in the 59/60 season and the atmosphere we created on that small terrace.
