This is a good win, because essentially it's a fancy training session. Gets minutes in legs of players that haven't played, some established players get to continue momentum and there was a win at the end which is great for everyone. There's a lot to be said for winning regardless of the competition.

I don’t mind this competition, apart from playing Premier League u’21 sides. The opportunity to give fringe players ‘mildly’ competitive game time and I find interesting. That said seeing these numbers can’t help but think on the whole it probably costs the club more than it makes, given attendance records etc.

 

I’m not only talking about that one incident though. I agree on that point, it was the other occasions where the wrong decisions were taken, but it’s a learning curve.

 

I quite like the young lads show boating. I think it demonstrates confidence in their own ability. Yes they may well come a cropper and subsequently the team, but they will learn, but let’s not try squash enthusiasm and development of their technical skills. I dare say it did wind up the opposition, but who cares about that. We need as much positivity as we can manage going forward.

You are right …..It’s part of their professional development .

On a different note….Even playing a basically second string 11 , I thought KM set up the 11 really , really well again, other than two occasions I can think of , our defence wasn’t troubled, Doyle having to make just one save.

Notice how “ dodgy “ defenders have reasonably decent games all of a sudden, because they aren’t asked to Fanny about with the ball across the back line ?

The more I see in the improvement of the ethos , tactics, and application , the more encouraged I am .

They are night and day better.

 

The fact he made 9 changes is also really important in terms of making sure those fringe players feel involved, have something to play for and are able to stake a claim for being considered in the squad for league games. I'm convinced Hughes wouldn't have done that, yes he would have made 3 or 4 changes, but he would probably have started with the likes of Lewis, Cook, Stubbs and Walker, all players that will have benefitted from a night off.

 

I like the fact he has resorted to the more attacking formation of 4-3-3 it suits our players much more than the more defensive formations
