I don't think we have the players capable of only playing a 2 man midfield. Reeves works best in a 3 man midfield anyway, so I'd go with Devitt, Reeves and Cooke.

 

I agree a 3 man midfield with one prepared to go wide when required with Connolly or Middleton on the wing, so for me 4-4-2, time will tell.

 

4-4-2 for me but Reeves can't play in a 2 in centre mid and I don't want to see a central midfielder out wide.. Taylor out wide was an utter waste.

 

Agree. Would go with Pritchard-Cooke-Devitt

He has the tight physicality and build for a holding/defensive midfielder, however ironically he’s lacked in these areas so far.

That would be my team but I suspect Reeves may start in place of Cooke, who could start over Pritchard further ahead.

If Middleton hasn't received clearance then Connolly can come in.

 

I think his physicality gives the impression that he's a big domineering DM but in fact he's anything but that. If his fitness was better he could be a useful box to box midfielder but that's probably it.

 

A big, strong athletic player that can tackle and get forward.

Not really. On his day, that’s exactly the type of player that Akpan is. The problem is that “his day” only occurs 2-3 times per season

 

We can’t afford to play Callum and Jake though, in my opinion. And on recent form, Callum would get my nod over the pair

 

Even when Akpan has had good games, it's never because of his defensive contributions, of which there are normally none. I think people confuse akpan for a defensive hard man because of his misleading physical presence.

 

Not true. I recall watching him boss midfield in a home game earlier this season. He took the ball off the opposition at will. As I said, the problem is that he should be dominating midfield like that every game but doesn’t

 

Akpan has never been that sort of player, at his other clubs he's always been a player that works better with the ball than trying to retain it.
