No I havent done any of the above, and I have no intention of doing so, but fair play to them. At least they are practising what they preach, unlike the left wing luvvies led by Emma Thomson over here. Lets see if they stick to their principles for life
I am not going to feel guilty though about driving to work to support my family
I am not going to feel guilty about boarding a plane a couple of times a year for a hard earned holiday in the sun, or visit family who dont live in the UK
I wont feel guilty about lighting and heating my home

It all sounds just like the whole Brexit argument again where one side claims the other side are "thick" and "racists" if they don't agree.
It's as predictable as it is laughable.Cityboy and Idlebantam like this. -
Even if the world went net-zero there is a finite impact we can have on it so going all-in is potential pointless as you get diminishing returns while having a negative economic impact. Lets say if reducing to 40% limits rises to 2 degrees and 80% limits it to 1.8 degrees is it really worth rushing to it achieve 80% or is it better to follow through on a structured longer-term plan to get to 80% (or 100%) that doesn't result in significant issues elsewhere that see things like mass unemployment happening. That's the kind of nuance that these kids are missing, they aren't listening to a broad range of climate change scientists and people like economist, they just listen to the most alarmist who wants us to cut back overnight even if it sends us back to the dark ages

She is a remarkable young woman and somebody who should be admired and not vilified. From her original protest on her own as a 15 year old with her hand drawn placard outside the Swedish Parliament, it has grown into a global campaign which some politicians still try to ignore. They don't like the message because the message is so powerful and she has the science on her side.
For those middle aged adults who still try to ignore her or put her down, there is now a Greta Thunberg helpline ....

Others are joining the cause now but nobody was talking about her being groomed this time last year when she was protesting outside the Swedish parliament on her own. Or when she pressured her mum to change careers so she didn’t fly as frequently. Who was “pulling her strings” then?
It’s sad that just because some people weren’t engaged with bigger issues than their social life at 16 doesn’t mean other people can’t have bigger thoughts/ideas/ambitions/passions at a young age.Dennis and Offcomedun like this. -

I genuinely cannot understand why you are so dismissive of concerns about the environment and the impact on human life.
How many millions, if not billions, were spent in this country to make changes and clean up after the impacts of heavy industry became clear? Poisoned rivers, thousands dying in London as a result of air pollution in the fifties and even the great floods in the Netherlands and Norfolk when it became clear that irrigation methods were endangering lives as examples close to home.
I've worked in India and seen the impact on people of unregulated activity. Smog where you can hardly breathe. People crawling around in fetid dumps, trying to find something of value to sell because they have nothing.
You could take a look at the work of the photographer Michael Wolf and his investigation of the lives and conditions of people who work in factories producing plastic toys. Stuff that gets thrown away almost immediately, but causes great hardship for those producing it in near, if not absolute, slavery.
Or you can pour scorn on people who want to change this.Stop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... Click to expand...Hoochy-Min and Skyebantam like this. -
Wonder what she will do when the spot light drifts off her, back to school and catch up on the last 12 months?

If Miss Thunberg read that, she wouldnt have a clue what you were on about
Whoever is pulling her strings should be ashamed of themselves, using a child like this.

We've come through a period of political youth apathy in the era of Thatcher and Reagan's children. All the signs are that that is changing and I welcome it.
I take your point about India and China. But the West can't get sanctimonious with them unless it gets its own house in order. We spent a hundred industrial years burning fossil fuels and exploiting the non-industrial world's resources to achieve global economic domination. Now that they are playing catch-up we can't expect them to behave ecologically responsibly unless we do too.Newquaybantam likes this. -

Brexit is clearly a political/economic issue where whichever side you are on is a matter of personal political opinion. I fundamentally disagree with Brexiteers but I accept their right to have a different opinion from mine.
Climate change is a fact. It's happening and every credible scientist on the planet accepts this and knows that massive change is required. Believing that climate change isn't happening, or isn't a problem or isn't exacerbated by human activity is ridiculous. It's like believing that the earth is flat.Matnab likes this. -
