Sorry to go off topic but it is valentines day and RE Geoffrey I wouldn’t swap those two prem years for anything, despite the turmoil that followed.

maybe its that Im a gambler and like to take risks, but is say its better to have loved and lost then never to have loved at all.

we had some great memories - dean ‘walking stick’ Saunders at Boro was a great win, and obviously Liverpool, Wimbledon, Arsenal, Newcastle, even Chelsea in the next season. West Ham goal fest away with Jamo bagging.

look at the other filth in L2. What have Stevenage ever had to enjoy for example, or Orient, let alone Barrow and Harrogate. Teams trapped in the bottom divisions for years. Most lack resources, ambition and some direction. Geoffrey got us there.

If i saw BFG I’d shake his hand, not abuse him, but for the risk averse types out there, I get why he’s hated and polarises opinions.

I'm not sure even those who have a different opinion with regards our Premiership days would abuse Geoffrey why would they, he gave us the promised land.

Exactly as I posted earlier Dave. Those that stood around in meagre crowds battling it out with Halifax et al in freezing cold winters where the only protection from wind , rain and chill was a beef tea and a stanchion wouldn’t swap it for the world , especially as bottom of DIV 4 was always a worry.

think you will always have a split I know it was good in the PL but was it worth the mess we ended up in ????? Weeks of worrying if there would be a Bradford City :( still I do get both sides of it ........... who would have thought beating Liverpool would have led to such dire affect not just on us but L@@day and Wimbledon Fc had they survived then there may have never been that plastic club from MK

Well said, I also would shake his hand. He gave me some of my best moments as a City supporter.

I would never hate or abuse him. Nevertheless, he did put our club in jeopardy and yes he was a gambler. We had a fantastic time and probably would not have had that.
I will never forget Wolves away last day of the season. We had a fantastic day, just unbelievable. GR was interviewed after the match and they asked him whether we had any money and he stated none at all no idea where we will find the money. It was an odd thing to say to the press as he was normally ebullient.
It is my view that we have been paying for our meteoric rise ever since.

I wouldn't swap that promotion season for anything. Mills, Blake and Beagrie tearing defences apart for fun. Stuart and Gareth Whalley dominating midfield. Goals a-plenty. Fantastic stuff.
The first season in the PL was fun too. But, if I could turn back time, I'd have Wetherall's header sail over the bar and see us relegated that season. We'd have stabilised in what is now the Championship and might even have had other, less ruinous, spells in the PL. The ten year decline down to L2 was soooo depressing.

On the other hand, we wouldn't have had the History Makers, or the best half of football I've ever seen, against the evil that is Chelski. C'est la vie.

That promotion season was like nothing we had experienced before. Going into every match thinking we would win and winning most of them. Only City supporters thought we could do it but even we were not sure. City in the PL. J remember being diss appointed when the fixtures list came out and we were only playing Middlesbrough….

Richmonds mistake was signing has been players in the second premier league season. All on massive wages, most of them bar Peter artherton did zero for city, and only signed for the money.

All connected but there were other big mistakes too. Falling out with Jewell and insisting we entered the Intertoto Cup amongst them.

When else were we, as City fans, going to get the chance to watch our team in Europe?

GR made plenty of mistakes but giving us the chance to complete against European sides wasn't one of them.

That's one point of view, but arguably our squad wasn't good enough or big enough to cope with the extra matches in the close season after a gruelling first season in the top flight. Jewell was not in favour and it was one of the reasons he and Richmond fell out, which was a big loss to us at the time.

Brilliant in hindsight, ridiculous in practice.

Ask @Interested Bystander@Interested Bystander if he thought, in May last year, West Ham should forfeit their European spot just incase it affected their PL campaign for the upcoming season?

Well I agree my view is one from hindsight. In hindsight I think it was a mistake based on the reasons I gave in my earlier post, you do not agree. That's fine.

Not a chance, as it happens we've been poor all season in the PL, but won 6 out of 6 in Europe. If we do go down it's not the end of the world, been there and done it before.

@Lard Arse@Lard Arse hit the nail on the head above and put it better in a single sentence than I could have in 10 paragraphs.

There is a book out there “ Pain and the Glory “ it shows what sort of bloke Richmond was ............. he should have let Jewell go on and build a squad that was capable of keeping us in the Premier league again !!!!! Sadly Richmond thought that us staying in the Premier league was the gateway to a top 10 finish when the big reason we stayed up was down to an absolute mega collapse by Wimbledon ...............I must be one of the few that thought the Premier league years where ok ...........we had thousands of glory hunters jump on board only to jump back off once it went tits up .......... at least you can’t say the same of our current crowd now ............. going up and down the land watching City during the early to late 90s only to be denied a ticket for Man U away because some glory hunting winner ( whose never been to a game ) gets one ahead of me :( Yes the football was great especially the season leading up to it but I wonder how many folk who had gone through the lean years during the 90s felt a bit pissed off that they weren’t looked after a bit better .............. at least the loyalty scheme now actually looks after the folk who are willing to go up and down the land despite how crap it was .............. like I said earlier there will always be a split on it ...........Richmond thought he knew better than a proven manager and sadly only this club could fall for it again in Rahic
