A sensible move all round. Fair play to the Government and Footballing bodies for their financial and practical support in the circumstances, and fair play to the club for topping up the 80% wage contribution to give everyone at the club their full salary.

As the club have officially put them all on furlough does this mean they can not give them work to do which would include training schedules? -

Definitely a sensible move by the club.
Even before the present uncharted waters we have obviously learnt lesson's from past financial issues at our club.
If it means we survive and jobs are protected for now, hats off to the officials at the club.
Stay safe everyone. -
Makes sense.

If your employee does volunteer work or training
A furloughed employee can take part in volunteer work or training, as long as it does not provide services to or generate revenue for, or on behalf of your organisation.
However, if workers are required to for example, complete online training courses whilst they are furloughed, then they must be paid at least the NLW/NMW for the time spent training, even if this is more than the 80% of their wage that will be subsidised. -

Technically the players are working from home so why shouldn't they continue with their fitness regime?

Essentially a furloughed employee is no longer working for the company (in this case the club) for a given period of time (up to 3 months I believe). If they want to qualify for the 80% government scheme they can undertake no duties for the company as they have essentially been temporary laid off.
A number of people at my work have been furloughed, with a few other employees (including myself) asked to work from home. My employer however is not making up the extra 20% and so the furloughed employees are on a reduced salary. -
Mean while permier league players... Are being taken care of.. Before their club.
