Humphrys isn’t really a target man

Can’t take you seriously if you’re suggesting Jon Stead. His legs went when we got rid years ago

Didn't YOU* point out that he had to find space and failed? Do you think he will get that freedom higher up or at other clubs?

*if not you, it was another poster

So who did then? I’m sure even @EwanJM@EwanJM said we were offered 2. So who said Sammon was the only option?

This is the bit you are not getting. Either that or you are just out for an argument.

Who said we are looking at a target man to “play teams off the park”? We said we should continue to persevere with the formula that worked in December. But if teams are squeezing us and PlanA isn’t working, bring in someone that can actually help PlanB to work. Hoofing it up field to players that can’t play that way is just a waste.

    What part aren’t you getting?

Hence why I said if not you, it came from someone else. Doh..!

Fact is, as someone pointed out, Payne was crowded out and was unable to find space to influence the game. So, back to the point you had replied to, if he can’t find space for us, why would he find it at another club? Do they get to play with 11 men plus Payne???

Which part am I disagreeing with you?

I’ve already said how we can go back to how we played in December. And how it worked so well. We didn’t have a target man then.

We need wingers for a plan B. Not a donkey target man to lump it up to

Why are you always so over the top condescending in your replies? Have you got issues?

I’m fairly certain Payne has proved his worth this season already. Double figures for goals in a shocking side who “lump it” over our best players.

He can find the space and has clearly proved it. The majority of top clubs were after him and will be in the summer.

He helped Blackburn to promotion last season and is 24 years old. He will be in this league or the league above next season, probably not with us

Offered two, turned them down. Went for a third but the selling club refused to sell to us. We definitely wanted a target man (Bournemouth confirmed our interest in Surridge on Jan 4) but as the window went on, it was obvious that there wasn’t one of sufficient quality available so DH moved on and explored other options. Resulting in Clarke.

That's like setting off to go Harrods and ending up in B & M.

    Is Clarke a striker? No!

Didn't Hopkin say he didn't want a target man?

If he was offered Conor Sammon that would have been a loan till the end of the current season, I'd have thought that carried little risk.

So ends up with none and a number 10 we don't need?

    Yeah that's smart!

And I can’t take you seriously if you can’t see that Humphrys IS a targetman. We need someone that can come off the bench if PlanA isn’t working. Jon Stead has started 21 times for his club this season and finished most of them. You’re telling me that he couldn’t do a job for 30+ minutes for a L1 side? Besides, I clearly said someone LIKE Jon Stead, that could do the role and not break the bank.

As I said, you are just looking for an argument rather than acknowledging there is a point to be made

And with this loss, we've now lost as many league matches at home in the past season-and-two-thirds as we did in the previous 4 whole seasons in this division. Another day, another depressing stat about our current plight.

Condescending? I’m using the same tone to you as you are to me. Just read back your comments and you’ll see that you are no different.

As for Payne, you’ve said yourself that as teams are now crowding midfield and allowing our defenders time and space on the ball, the likes of Ball and Payne are not being able to impact the game as they were. When I suggested rolling the ball out to our fullbacks, you asked me what they would do with it since Payne is unable to find the space. Now you’re arguing against yourself!!

He can find space, of course he can. But not when the opposition flood midfield to stop him. And that was my point. If teams set up that way, he has to find other ways to receive the ball and if he can’t, why would he be able to at another club?

What part are you disagreeing with? Did you really just ask that?

The part that I have continued to raise, in that we need a targetman that can offer a different option that the current offerings. I get that you think a wide man is the answer, but we didn’t sign one of them either. So what is the current situation? We continue to play through the middle and if teams crowd us and stop us playing, we jump it forward to nobody and if that doesn’t work, let’s bring on like-for-like replacements and continue to do the same.

Which will bring us full circle and your argument that no money was available to bring in alternative solutions. This, despite the fact we signed Butterfield, Clarke and have a couple of players on trial

And on that basis, this is my last response to you on the subject

But this is the bit I don’t get. If money is tight and we knew we wanted a targetman, why sign a like-for-like player to Payne? He’s not going to start before him and isn’t the player we need. Hopkin has admitted enough.

That’s like a vegetarian going to buy a nut roast, not being able to find one, so comes back from the shops with a beef joint. Pointless
