I agree with this, but is O’Donnell capable of having the ball and not having an urge to launch it upfield?

I don’t think we will get a sweeper keeper in league one.

He can launch it but when we then get it we need to play football

No, sunshine, I’m arguing with someone that forgets his point. When @Rogered Tart@Rogered Tart suggested we had January to bring in different options and failed, you replied with “with what money”.

I clearly said we HAVE money but chose not to spend it on a targetman. I have no idea what other players were offered to us or who were available. We do know about Sammon (hence why I name him - no obsession).

But we clearly have money as we spent some on Butterfield and Clarke and we are still trialling players.

Doesn’t need to be a bloody sweeper keeper. He has arms and can just as easily throw the ball out to the likes of Caddis and Woods/Chicksen. There were half a dozen times yesterday when Butterfield dropped for the ball and O’Donnell just gestures to him and our back 4 to push up, before hoofing it long

If he bowled it out to the full backs where would they have gone with the ball yesterday?

We have no wingers to pass it to so they have to go long then too. We were crowded out in the middle so the only option they have would have been long.

As I said in another post, If we play wood and ball out wider we can go short from the keeper. Otherwise we’d lose it with them bearing down on our goal

If Sammon was our only option as a target man I’m glad we signed Clarke

I think you're being unrealistic. We had Bruenker who we paid a fee for and was allegedly earning 3k a week. Target men of his quality don't come cheap and we're already £2M in debt.

    How is he?

Most football clubs are in debt.

What is this 2m and does it urgently or really need covering?

How much money would we lose if we go down? Wouldn't risk v reward of been the sensible method to make sure we stay up?

Also how many times! Hopkin said he didn't want a target man.

Billy Clarke is not a target man though and it is unlikely we will see much of Billy when Payne is starting.
Playing Doyle and Clarke upfront together makes little sense either.
Sammon's recent record is poor and you would expect Hopkin to get a better option but he didnt and Sammon is 6 foot 2, so could bring the best out of either Doyle or Miller.

Just because he’s tall doesn’t mean he’s good.

You didnt read it did you; it is a moot point but Sammon could bring the best out of the other striker, hold the ball up, more chances in the box and more goals for Doyle and Miller.

I did say his recent record is poor but the lack of a target man is going to doom this team.
    Along with the leaky defence.

I’m just not having signing Connor Sammon or someone similar would mean we would go and play teams off of the park.

Key for me was wide men and somewhere to get the ball to. Our best football at times came when Mellor was on the right and we had an out ball and someone to play too. And then recently with wood on the left. It gives us balance to our game and somewhere to get the ball to when it’s too bogged down in the middle. Fleetwood packed the middle and won every header from our pointless long balls. I’m not discounting that.

Get scannell back and wood/mcgugan if he’s worth a contract down the left and give us some style to the play.

If Jack Payne can't hack it against the likes of Southend, Fleetwood etc who would pick up his contract at his current level if Huddersfield don't take up the option of another 12 months....?

Did you ACTUALLY watch the game? On the rare occasions we did use the full-backs, we did get up field with the ball and on one occasions went all the way up field only for the cross to be blocked for a corner. You did see this right? Just because they squeeze play, doesn’t mean they have any extra players on the pitch.

When Caddis and Chicksen advanced with the ball, the players that had been marking up Ball and Payne suddenly had to come to close them down, leaving more space for our creative players. It actually happened so I’m not sure why you’re arguing against it.....!

Go on then, enlighten me. How much did Southend spend on Humphrys?

Not sure why you are bringing someone that was clearly part of Rahic’s pet project into the debate. It skews the whole argument. I’m sure someone like Jon Stead wouldn’t break the bank and would have been in our price range. If you’re looking, you will find. If you’re expecting to not be able to find, you’re already partially sighted!!
