What position did he play in the youth team? He's been fine at right back but looks more of a centre back sometimes. I'm just wondering if he's been shoe horned in there due to Hossanahs injury or if he is actually a natural right back.

I think I read that he's a CB, if he developed in possession I think he's going to be a very solid player in either a full back or centre back roll.

Good on him. Solid defensively, needs to improve with his use of the ball - but our young players have acquitted themselves very well in a very difficult set of circumstances. One for the future!

    That's not true.

We haven't struggled to produced young players. We have just sold them off before you even got to know about them.

This contract is deserved. He has got into the 1st team squad and already over taken French.

    Good move signing him up.

I agree. He doesn't quite have the speed off the mark that a right/left back needs and hence he's been caught out a couple of times but positioning wise he's been good. Also doesn't look as comfortable going forwards which would also hint at more of a centre back. Not knocking the lad, he's done well! Just feel he could be a better fit centrally.

This is just what we need bringing young lads through, good for the future. Just need to get rid of the dross.
Hopefully we can “ Move on up “ like Curtis Mayfield stated
    Just move on up
    Toward your destination
    Though you may find
    from time to time
    complication

A great motivation for lads in the youth team too - see the likes of Staunton and FCD getting games and pro contracts, has to be a great incentive.

Whatever is natural position is I personally have been impressed with his attitude and contribution so far. In one of the recent games he struggled early on but didn't buckle, he got to grips with the situation and then looked quite composed. Plus having watched the game back he actually had two players to mark early on.

I agree he's done well. It wasn't a dig at the lad, I was genuinely curious as to his usual position as I'd never seen him play before and he doesn't strike me as the modern day full back type.

I'm struggling to think of more than 2 in the last 10 years who have come through our Academy and then been sold on for hard cash to another club. One rose spectacularly to the highest level and the other nose-dived. There have been others who were supposedly destined for a glistening career - the likes of James King, Sam Wright, Joe Brennan, Webb-Foster, even DMH and others - whose future careers have come to nothing.

Who are you referring to when you say they have come through our Academy and been sold before anybody knew about them?

Not all from the academy but over a 20 year period we've either produced or (picked up for nothing and) developed George Green, Andre Wisdom, Fabian Delph, Oli McBurney, Tom Cleverley, Andy O'Brien, Simon Francis, Nahki Wells and probably a couple I've missed but all netted us an average of £1,000,000 each with add ons. If we produce £500,000 a year we aren't doing too badly.

I understand all of that. You've not really addressed the question I asked of Fordy when he referred to playersd who have come through our Academy and been sold off before we knew who they were.

Your examples are all well known whereas Fordy was saying we have produced young players and sold them on before we even knew who they were. For the record, two of your list did not come through our academy and another two left the academy more than 20 years ago when they were about 11 years old!

I'd still like to know from @Fordy117@Fordy117 who these Academy players are who were sold on before we even knew who they were.

Agree not sure who he is referring to.

    Delph: left in 2001
    Cleverly: left in 2000
    Wisdom: left in 2008
Heaton: left in 2011 (ruined on Merseyside!;))
    Colebeck: left in 2009
O’Brien: left in 2012 (only played a handful of games for Oxford/Exeter)
Green: left in 2011 (ruined on Merseyside;))

The only player I can think of is McBurnie.

Simon Francis and Nahki Wells were not City academy players! Andy O’Brien left in 2001. Nearly ancient history that.

In the past ten years, I struggle to think of anybody who came through our academy and was sold on other than George Green and McBurnie of course.

I'd like to understand who Fordy was referring to.

ps Heaton went on a sale or return basis to Liverpool ... and returned! ;)
