As I said at the time that's been the problem with the PL. The initial idea always was for an 18 club league, how to do that though wasn't part of the formal structure, it was something they decided to leave to decide later but then the number of votes to get things passed ended up being a problem. The only way to get it down to 20 was bringing in parachute payments and it created a situation now where we have yoyo clubs as a result of these payments who when they are in the PL will vote down anything which might actually improve the English setup but might hinder them, this has included multiple proposals to increase solidarity payments over the years. When they do agree to things it's usually just minor things and usually requires a parachute payment increase.

And that's the thing its easy to make the big clubs out to be the bad guys and sure there is always an element of self-interest but its also often looking at making the product more appealing which is better for everyone. The clubs voting things down that get seen as heroes are often the ones who actually dilute the product to serve their self-interest.

It's like with the CL reforms, it's all about adding more and more clubs to European competitions based on a quantity over quality basis. They may add 100 more matches but the TV and sponsorship deals wont increase by the equivalent of 100 matches as let's be honest people aren't tuning in to watch matches like Dundalk vs Ki or lech Poznan vs Charleroi or Bode vs Zalgiris etc. If a club wins all their matches in the new system then sure they will get more than winning all their matches in the current one but it will be less per match. And there is a real risk of devaluing matches and seeing attendances drop as well. UEFA should be looking to make it a stronger product not a weaker one while still giving some smaller teams a chance to earn their place

No as they lose over half their TV audience and hence devalues their deal. maybe even more if these 6 then create a rival league of those 6 and invite some of the other big appeal clubs, including some of the fallen giants and maybe even Rangers and Celtic which would be way more appealing to TV audiences and hence broadcasters than a league with Brighton vs Burnley

You're correct @SimonW@SimonW I personally dont give one, my team will never be involved but at least it's possible for lesser teams to make it and compete unlike the ESL.

As you say both players and fans will have an influence on this, it's difficult to see what happens with a footballer who's coming to the end of his career wanting to continue playing at let's say Championship level once he took his pound of flesh from ths ESL I doubt he would be allowed back, having said that not many players this day and age drop division to continue to play.
I think with regards fans the instigaters of this have little concern for the likes of United, City, Chelsea fans there is a massive audience in Asia, the Middle East etc that was Sepp Blatters comment with regards taking football to the outer regions of the world when most recognise if was nothing to do with football and all to do with money, is Blatter banged up yet ?.

It not only would cost them a shed load it would also get overturned as as far as I’m aware they haven’t broken any rules yet. All they have done is suggest a new competition.

Will the players have a say in it? They will still be legally contracted to the club. I’d be surprised if there was a clause saying the team had to be in the premier league etc in most contracts.

I’ve got no idea as to the legal implications, but if players are prevented from being able to play PL and international games, I’d imagine they’d have some recourse. Whether they’d want to, as they’re going to earn even more, is another matter.

not sure they would unless it is written into their contract. Do England players even get paid to play?

Still can't advocate a win for that lot... I'll take an amicable score draw.

I think they just want to turn these clubs into footballing versions of the harlem globetrotters.

I feel I could describe how pissed off I still am about this in at least four or five completely separate rants.

Fair play to Mourinho if the reports are true that he was sacked after refusing to take his team out to train this morning in protest to Spurs signing up to the ESL

Since the inception of the premier league the gap between the rich and poor has grown. The champions league riches has made the gap even wider. Fans have tolerated this up to this point in this country though fans abroad have long campaigned against the greed on UEFA, FIFA and the broadcast companies. This is the first time i've seen an all out backlash to new proposals in footballand it will be interesting to see which way it goes.

    3 countries

    Think they're missing the point.

Seeing Man Utd vs Barcelona in a nothing match for the fourth season in a row (and guaranteed to keep happening) isn't going to be more interesting than a Bayern Munich vs Paris St Germain UCL final and that's facts.

Florentino Perez' only hope is to sell this repetitive tripe to a mildly interested China, who will then import the product.

You're probably right. The only reason I mentioned it was because I was told by a friend who's son in law works for ITV news that there was a lot of chatter about it yesterday so thought there might be something in it.

What makes me think it might just be true is the timing. What club sacks their manager five days before a cup final at Wembley, in normal circumstances?

The clue is after. And they lost.
I think most people expected Mourinho to get the chop at the end of the season. But why would they do it just before a Wembley final?
