Hey don’t scoff. The wife makes lots of wine, my favourite are strawberry, rose, elderberry, raspberry. It’s lovely stuff at 12%!

However for the absolute massif amongst us, home made flavoured gin. This is the real McCoy.
Strawberry, Rasberry and Sloe from the local hedgerows . Tastes wonderful with Fevertree About 20 bottles in various stages of readiness.

I've been the worse for wear at VP more times than I care to remember. When I was younger, match days would entail a minor pub crawl, starting at the Unicorn on Ivegate, visting various hostelries on the way and finishing at the Belle Vue. Then I'd consume a couple of Cornish pasties in the first half to mop up the remaining alcohol in my system.

These days, anything more than a pint before the game and I'm back and forth to inspect VP's plumbing throughout the first half. Can't remember the amount of goals and match changing incidents I've missed because of it. So I limit myself to one solitary pre match pint, when that would have been considered a mere appetizer when I was younger. Such are the joys of getting long in the tooth.

Salford away was the last time I went out drinking at lunchtime; I spent pre-match in Prestwich, just up the road from the ground.

I have a number of favourite trips, must do matches because of the excellent selection of pubs and ales. Norwich has probably been the longest standing top class trip, but over the years other excellent locations have emerged, such as Nottingham, Sheffield and Exeter.

There are also some classic smaller places such as Stroud, which I use for pre-match drinks before Swindon away and one I was hoping to do last year before our match at Forest Green Rovers.

That said few places can beat Bradford, from the great selection of ales at the Corn Dolly and Jacobs Well to the great bars along North Parade.

Drinking beer at home is a poor second for me, but I've tried to create a matchday routine which tries to recreate some of my matchday routine.

This week I will be 'attending' the CAMRA winter beer festival, which runs from Friday to Sunday, so my matchday selection will include some of the beers CAMRA have sent me for the festival.

In the meantime, I've got a new beer to try later this evening, which has a name and label reflecting two recent online zoom meetings that made the news:

I’m watching from my bar. Despite having a very long shelf life, I might have a go on the big guns lurking at the back seeing as it’s a holiday! 2C628C1E-82E8-44EC-A516-A3E8B9A6118D.jpeg

This is rather old. We’ve got 15 taps now. Which is good as we get rather busy in summer!

Not come a cross Saltaire Amber, will look out for it. Titus is my favourite of the Saltaire brands, though I have to hold my hands up and say I'm very definitely a Timmy Taylors man

I wouldn't describe it as horrible. If you find a decent cellar conditioned Black Sheep, it's a good pint in my opinion. I tried it over here in Estonia, and imported it along with Timmy Taylors and Pedigree. It didn't take off, because as ale in Estonia is relatively new, the drinkers here have all been brought up on modern style IPA's (my fault, because I was the first person to bring in IPA to Estonia - Brewdog Punk), and if it's not hopped to hell, they won't drink it. Black Sheep, Marstons and Landlord in their opinion wasn't a "proper IPA". Kind of amusing when Pedigree from Burton along with Bass, was the original IPA. Fortunately the hop trend is fading now, and I'm waiting for Covid to feck off, so I can start my new project, which is being the first pub to serve cask ale in Estonia.

As some folk seem either oblivious to good beer or just don't want us beer monsters messing up the match day thread with talk about our favourite pints, how about a separate thread to discuss what we plan to drink (whilst ruminating over Ifollow to keep it City Talk related).

Stick it in general and only the hard core who ever go in there will see it and we'll just end up reverting to a matchday thread takeover.

Personally I don’t think you can go wrong with a lovely drop of Strongbow, particularly dark fruits.

All you beer snobs with your Bishop’s bollocks IPA are just pretending to like it. As for Gin, like drinking my Gran’s perfume.

Nothing wrong with Spoons. Good beer at good prices, just avoid the Ruddles County, especially if you plan to have a curry later.

    Here’s my passage of play:
    Take photo of beer.
    Rush into lounge with beer.
Set up laptop to watch match.
    Sit down. Can’t find beer.
    Look in kitchen. Nope.
    Return to lounge. Search continues.
Notice cushion on floor. Pick it up.
    Spill full pint over floor.
Rush to kitchen to clean up.
While in kitchen, I hear Scunthorpe score.
Realise I might need more than just my one remaining can if this game goes the wrong way.

Mmmmmm.....Landlord.... Some years ago, when I was still living in Manitoba, the Liquor Commission brought that in for a while. Alas, they stopped importing it, and I moved out... The Ontario Commission hasn't listed it in the time I've been here. But we do get the Hobgoblin.

But, in the attempts to support the local breweries, it'll be something more local for me today:

From the Amsterdam Brewery in Toronto. Very nice, and, as they claim, very hoppy.

    Going for different styles:
First half: Worthington, White Shield 5.6% (Donaldson/Cook type beer to start, traditional and classy)
Second half: Hop Back, Crop Circle 4.2% (Vernam/Crankshaw light type beer, with a good after taste).

I was part of the branding team that did the relaunch for the beer. The marketing team provided the blurb for the back label, and completely messed up, by putting "Cape Horn" instead of "Cape of Good Hope" for the beers journey. We had to recall many thousands of bottles. Never trust marketeers who are in their 20's and who drink Carling over ale!

Was only a joke. All empty and for display purposes only! Otherwise I’d be in real trouble right now.
