12pm tomorrow during PMQs is going to be the best time to announce anything. No one will notice at all.

I understand what you are saying, but it still confirms there were 1.6m tests taken in the last day. I doubt those who are testing positive on a LFT are not confirming it with a PCR regardless of what they are asked to do.

I know 6 people that have tested positive with LFT since the announcement last week that haven't bothered to get a PCR done even though the rule only officially changed yesterday. Their bosses didn't ask them for proof so they are just isolating

Granted but 1.6m tests were still done showing that lots of people still are.

When those tests go back to the 6/7m they were pre December then it will be clear that people are listening. At 1.6m per day, the sample size of testing is still massive.

A friend was confirmed with covid and told to isolate for 10 days, After 10 days he took another test which came out positive again so rang 111 and they told him just go back to work

Good times right around the corner - you reckon? Don't hold your breath.

Is there any evidence that excess demand is fuelling inflation at present? Despite the money printing, the economy is contracting. It's much more likely that Brexit and the pandemic are the main drivers of the increased costs which are fuelling both wage and price inflation.

Oh and printing money isn't intrinsically 'socialist'. It's been done by governments of all political persuasions around the world for centuries. It's only since Thatcher adopted the bonkers monetarist Friedmanite approach to running the economy as though it's a household budget that reflationary economic measures have been seen as bad or left wing. It's one of a range of economic tools that may or not be useful to any government, depending on the economic circumstances at the time.

Printing money unless done in an extreme way has yet to be proven to cause inflation and is not always a bad thing because we have our own currency so technically we owe the money to ourselves like the USA

Absolutely not about the good times! It was very much sarcastic.

I doubt it's Brexit....unless that's also affecting the USA? And yes to excess demand, look beyond these shores to the stimulus cheques, etc, etc, that have been specifically designed to get the economy growing, Everything for the past two years has been about propping up the income side of the equation with more money being pumped in but with less discretionary things for people to spend their money on - fewer holidays, less socalising, less commuting, less nights out, more uncertainty, etc, etc. It's built a well of pent up demand at the same time as a restriction in supply.

That's not to sat it wasn't partly necessary but there is a downside to printing new money constantly and inflation is how it shows itself.

And you're quite right about the printing money not being intrinsically socalist. Just that in this specific period it has been used for socalist measures.....once again....not necessarily a bad thing but more an acknowledgement that everything comes with a downside. There is no such thing as free money.

That's the utopian ideal isn't it. Just print more money, everyone gets more, there is no downside to it. More, more, more.

It doesn't make any actual common sense though.

But at the moment that pent up demand is theoretical rather than actual because, as you rightly say, there's nothing much to spend it on. The money saved is still sitting in people's bank accounts waiting to be spent. Once everything opens up there may well be an explosion of demand-pull inflation as people rush out to spend their savings but that's not what's happening now. Inflation is mostly being fueled by increased costs of importing goods due to Brexit and labour shortages (part Brexit, part pandemic) pushing up wages.
