Hardly seen anyone outside wearing one except if walking directly between shops etc.
Went to the new Lidl and hardly anyone had a mask on, staff or customers, but Morrisons most people had them on

It says 'when outside their homes', not outside. It obviously doesn't mean that 19 out of 20 people are wearing masks in the open air. It means that they are wearing them when going to places other than their own homes, eg shops, pubs, restaurants etc.

I agree. Is that still actually reflective of your experience though? 95%?

I wouldn't think it was even 20% in the bars and restaurants? Maybe 50% in the shops and transport? Nowhere is it 19 out of 20 though?

I had to go to the Broadway on friday, entering the centre I had to walk past two guys with large boxes of masks (I was actually wearing one) and the first thing they asked was if I'd been vaccinated. Quite a personal question for shopping centre staff, I asked what relevance it had and they pointed over to one of the units where a vaccination unit had been set up. Now I've had one jab, I'm not ani vaccination nor am I anti mask but it felt almost to a point of being bullied with big boxes of masks on show and being pointed in the direction of a vaccination unit. Made me feel very uneasy.

They must have been very big guys to make you feel uneasy.
Seriously I would have pointed at the mask you were wearing and told them it was none of their business if you'd been vaccinated or not.

It was weird, as I mentioned I'm not anti vaccine and I'd personally recommend getting them if asked my opinion. Just seemed very off putting being accosted as soon as you walk in.

I think it very much depends on which shops, bars and restaurants you frequent. I've been in a couple of country pubs for meals in the last few days and everyone I saw wore masks when not seated at their table, the staff all wore masks and there was a sign at the entrance requesting mask wearing. Likewise, in the shops I've been in, pretty much everyone has worn masks. I'm talking small shops in tourist areas. Big inner city supermarkets would probably be different, but I don't usually go in those. Having said that, I did pop in a large Tesco in Hereford on Friday and I'd say that at least 80% of customers were wearing masks.

I'm not sure the split is so clear. I just spent a weekend seeing friends in a tiny little village and didn't see anybody at all in a mask until I got on the train home. I can imagine some places are better than others though.

What we can definitely agree on I'm sure is that the 95% is complete bollocks when averaged out over the whole population.

I'm away at the moment and pretty much no one is wearing masks. It's differs in places. I have been to Morrisons and a there were more wearing masks than not but 95% no way.
Asda that dropped with alot more not wearing masks.
Driving here I saw someone on the motorway wearing a mask in their car on their own, I've seen someone riding a bike with a mask on but strangely didn't bother to wear a helmet.

Back home I saw a huge decline in masks as people seemed to do what the person infront of them did which is rather strange. Someone was about to put a mask on but saw the person enter the store before him without so put his mask in his pocket.

I would say the wearing of masks is going down the further from "freedom day" we move. Those who wear masks in cars and in the open air will probably now wear them forever and on the same basis those who have dropped their masks will not likely wear them again.

95% is a made up figure, it wasn't even that when mandatory and anyone who argues that statistic is remotely accurate is living in a dreamworld.

Why is it made out to be a big deal its individual choice, if they feel mask wearing is the correct thing to do whilst in I close contact with others what's the problem.
We've booked to go on the Dolly coach to Mansfield I will probably wear a mask whilst on the coach others may not.

Live and let live I say, I’ll wear them where I see fit or am told to but nowhere else. I’m still working from home but went into the office for an afternoon last week, have to wear masks when moving about but not while sat at the desk. Went to a restaurant and only two waiting staff wore them, couldn’t comment on customers as all were seated and I didn’t watch for any new customers walking in. I didn’t wear one and wasn’t asked to either but had it just in case. I would wear them on public transport however, though I rarely use it haven’t since pre Covid anyway.

Not like you to completely miss the point that the 95% of people still wearing masks it absolute garbage.

Each to their own to wearing masks, but why report on a survey that obviously is complete garbage when stepping out in the real world shows something else.

A report of mask wearing still relatively high following removal of restrictions would be fine. Claiming 95% is garbage, or can't we point that out in your view?

What is the point to miss ?, papers quoting % figures, the press quote figures to sell papers do your own thing, from our own experiance of being out in public we know 95% are not wearing masks since the easing of restrictions do what you think is the right thing to do as an individual and stop quoting figures that we know are false.

A bit of fact checking here:
    • the ONS survey took place from 21 to 25 July.
    • people were asked about the previous 7 days, so back as far as 14 July.
    • the 'compulsory' wearing of masks only ceased on 19 July.
    • the question related to whether or not someone had worn mask in the previous 7 days, not whether they were wearing one all the time.
So, the report effectively concluded that 95% of the population wore a mask at some point when they were still 'compulsory'.

Ah. so it's actually misleading/misinterpreted/misunderstood reporting by The Guardian rather than a dodgy underlying survey? I probably shouldn't be surprised to be honest!

I don't understand what the media get by doing this sort of thing but thank you for looking into it.

I will quote figures that I know to be garbage because if we just accept the rubbish we are told we have people so scared that they wear masks whilst driving alone in their car even when double vaccinated.

The fear has to stop. Even now with cases dropping there has to be some reason before we hit the abyss. We have to put a negative spin on everything.

Tell me why when schools broke up after the removal of restrictions are they a reason for cases dropping, but it's too early to see the effect of restrictions being dropped in the current figures, as that appears to be the current narrative. We'll it's 2 weeks since everything reopened and masks were dropped and I'm yet to see this cliff edge we were about to fall off.
