It is selfish but I'll let you off :)

The mindset that we have to get out of is that a longer lockdown would stop their being a risk of a resurgence and another lockdown, It wouldn't. Other than just 'living with it' the only thing that would stop lockdown 4 the vaccine working and it looks like it is.

It's a good job I didn't say it was a fact but I am surprised you know a lot of people that are on furlough given the latest set of data published only 1.8% of the UK population are furloughed.

Can you link me to that data as that is completely wrong. Every none essential shop in the UK is closed, all hospitality, gyms, leisure facilities, hairdressers, restaurants, etc are closed and you think the figure is 1.8%.

The times are quoting a figure of 20% for the start of January using figures from the office of national statistics.

Numbers in Bradford up again this week according to the Zoe study. Probably related to low vaccine take-up compared to other areas. I'm not comfortable with big relaxations while the local figures remain stubbornly high.

I'm not sure it could relate to a low take up of vaccines since the lockdown hasn't been loosened. Even a low take up of the vaccine shouldn't have a negative effect on the rate.

What it looks like is that lockdown establishes a natural plateau, which is why the idea that that a longer lockdown will automatically drive it down further seems to have flaws,

It's the same areas it has been through out and if what you say about low vaccine take up then I don't see why Bradford should be treated like a leper state due to the reluctance of a few. If people refuse to take the vaccine then be it on their head, the rest of the population should not be held to ransom and have to tip toe round this. I want my kids back at school and if someone vulnerable is refusing to help themselves then I don't see why we should all lockdown for longer.

    Found the data from January.

    https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/coronavirus-job-retention-scheme-statistics-january-2021/coronavirus-job-retention-scheme-statistics-january-2021

Seems that it was 3.8 million people at the end of December. very interested in the 1.8% figure as that seems way off.

    • latest figures show that the number of employments furloughed increased by 1.3 million at the start of November and increased further to a peak of 4.1 million on 11 November before falling back slightly to 3.9 million employments furloughed at 30 November.
    • provisional estimates for December show that the number of employments furloughed reduced in early December before increasing back to 3.9 million on 25 December. The number of jobs furloughed under the CJRS then reduced slightly to 3.8 million on 31 December.

That covers a period where various shops were in tiers. We were in tier 3 and non essential shops were open at this stage, pubs and restaurants were open in North Yorkshire too. So from the first week in January this will have gone up as the full lockdown kicked in.

The 1.8% figure isn't remotely close to being right. it's more 18%.

It won't be 18% @BradfordBanter@BradfordBanter was talking about the whole population I think (which is obviously flawed in itself) rather than the working population so 1.8% is about 1.2m

The figure quoted in The Times was 4.5m at the start of Jan. Even as a percentage of the whole population that is about 7%. Taking the whole population is so flawed as you say.

I thought Boris was supposed to be announcing his roadmap out of lockdown today?
No programme scheduled on the TV.
    Have I got it wrong?

Statement in the commons at 3.30pm, probably a press conference on the TV about 5pm and repeated on all the main news channels.

Let's hope the recent good news with regards the sucsess of the vaccines will give Boris more scoop with regards easing lockdown.
Four weeks after receiving a first dose, both the Pfizer/BioNTech and Oxford/AstraZeneca jabs cut hospitalisation with the disease by up to 85 and 94 per cent respectively.

It doesn't sound like it. It appears that mistakes of the past has made him reluctant to open at such a pace. It does seem bonkers that we are being ultra cautious on the verge of vaccinating the groups that account for 99% of the death where as last year with no vaccine it was get everything open asap.

Once bitten twice shy I suppose.
