If we don’t extend it we will only pay for it as a country further down the line. They will go on benefits possibly lose homes, can’t pay for cars etc etc.
If they remain on furlough, those people will still for a pint on the weekend if allowed, buy things for Christmas. Without furlough they would almost stop spending altogether.

We bite the bullet now and continue to pay what we have been doing for another 6 months and review again. I imagine that would reduce the cost of it in the longer term.

So yesterday's buttering up of the public was as we expected a pathway to further restrictions from a government who won't accept they are making it up as they go along and prefer to blame the public rather than systems that don't work, messages that are unclear and in many cases contradictory and with Mr Cummings, don't lead by example.

Back to the office, no wait all work from home!

I dunno about the first bit, but the strategy for proper test, track & trace makes sense to me.

Track & trace is a specialist and very skilled job, requiring tact, persuasive skills and proper training - not access to a half hour powerpoint presentation. Every local authority has track & trace experts in public/environmental health teams and STD teams. Those experts should have been the basis of our track & trace system from the start of the pandemic. They should have been up-funded, built upon and used to train the large number of new recruits required to swell the system. But this incompetent masquerade of a government refused to do the logical thing, bcause they are ideologically biased against the public sector and didn't want to bolster its size or reputation. So instead, they ignored exising expertise and tried to reinvent the wheel using their usual serial failure cronies like Serco and Dido Harding, with predictably awful results. So here we are, still with a shitshow of a system. It's an utter disgrace that one of the richest countries in the world is nowhere near having a properly functioning test, track and trace system nearly seven months from the start of the pandemic, despite the advance warning we had compared to countries further east.

Under the new rules, only 15 can attend a wedding.

But give all the guests guns and tell them to start firing away at grouse and you can have 30 attend.

Gives a whole new meaning to a shotgun wedding.

Flulike deaths and pneumonias in the week ending 11th of September rose from 694 to 893. Covid rose from 78 to 99. Flu season under way to join the cold epidemic that started early and is already clobbering school attendance? Why aren't masks and spacing making it later this year?

Thats because they are throwing the kitchen sink at CoVid. If they just left everyone to do as they pleased we would be seeing March type figures. I know this is a common theme, there has only been x amounts of deaths, well it is down to current restrictions.

In very much the same way there would be a reduction in break ins if 200 police were deployed to a single street.

So where’s the justification for choking the country and ramping up restrictions?

I'm not arguing for or against it, I'm just pointing out a flaw in the argument.

I have been fairly vocal that people should be able to go to football games and just because some people might not want to go somewhere the whole country shouldn't have to bow down to those who scream the loudest for restrictions.

both places i work at are bar service as normal, but with protective screens on the bar and distanced one way systems. my old place has just opened back up on the basis of the whole get people back working jobby, spent loads on a full refurb as well as the safety stuff and now theyve just had 3 hours cut off the hours they can open, with no financial support to make up for this. nobody has an issue with restrictions provided appropriate support is in place, as has been said this is just so they can look like they've got a clue but don't actually have to support anyone. fecking libertarians man, i really hope people say what an absolute failure of that way of thinking is whats causing a lot of this.

There's still a very interesting regional distribution in new cases. The divergence between North and South seems to be getting bigger.
