There is a huge amount of thinking to be done before it is conceivable that schools go back to anything like they were.

Managing social distancing will be almost impossible, especially in primary schools. Young children just do not get it, understandably. Additionally, schools are designed for space usage to be maximised. There is not the room to support desks being 2 metres apart.

We don’t know the role of children as carriers or transmitters of the virus.

Would PPE be provided for staff? Latest information I can find
, from the OECD in 2019, is that only 1 in 3 primary school teachers in the UK are under age 30. A significant amount of teachers will fall into the category of vulnerable or live with people who are deemed vulnerable. I fully recognise that right now there are hundreds of thousands of people performing roles in the NHS, in supermarkets, as delivery drivers or as other key public service workers who are having to deal with it now. They are not getting the protection they should, we all know that. I’d say the priority is to get those aspects of how we as a society operate better managed and then take that into the education sector.

How will the drop off and pick up be managed? I’ve worked in plenty of schools and I struggle to see how you can safely disperse 400 plus children at broadly the same time. You will immediately create thousands of mass gatherings of 800+ people across the country twice a day. May as well not have bothered with all the sacrifices that people are currently making.

I can see it being viable to have reduced class sizes, attendance on only a few days a week etc, which will help with the children’s education but that will not be sufficient as free childcare to support the economy.

As a teacher, I would love to get back into school and with the children. It is very hard knowing the lives that many children lead and how the lockdown will be impacting on them. However, it cannot be as it was before the schools closed.

Unfortunately I think you’re right. Best we could hope for would be 2 half days a week for each primary year group.
Our lads have just started their SeeSaw programme this morning - the school seem to have put some effort into getting it up and running. Lots of video messages from their form teachers etc.

I respect you highly but your post mate highlights to me the pickle the government finds themselves because each industry will moan about one thing or another.

I think Whitty yesterday was getting a little cheesed and basically implying that NHS workers are there to help save people's lives and to stop moaning about PPE etc.

School teachers are there to teach. I just think social distancing is the worse nightmare for any Industry but this is why for me it just come down to do or want to risk getting the virus or not? Let people decide. Djokovic the tennis player has said he wouldn't even take a vaccine if found. You need to let people make a decision.

As for primary schools, for me they need to open ASAP. These young kids are the ones you don't want to damage and need to protect. You know some parents are just not good people and fear for them kids.... f@ck the social distancing! Protect the kids of today.

I don't think you can leave the management of this virus down to individual discretion.

I don't see it as moaning, it is about the Government and us as a society to do our best to work through this. To find ways that reduce the risk of contracting the virus, to mitigate as far as possible the impacts of the lockdown and to find new ways of living so that we can all get back to work as safely as possible.

No vaccine though mate. We can all try to make these rules but the longer the lockdown the more chance of it being broken.

Shall we just crash the house marker and airline sector because I don't see how you get round social distancing in them industries. A people going to moan when they're in canteens?

The government will outline plans on how to work but I think it's near enough impossible.

I seen 4 policemen in a car the other day, Social distancing broken! Just think people just need to crack on and do what they need to do barring NHS and keyworkers who are on the front line... they need protection.

How can the NHS and keyworkers be protected if you want people to just get on with what they normally do?

NHS and key workers need protecting as they're saving people's lives.. police carry guns etc to protect themselves but let's not alll get into this we need PPE bollocks.

I don't want to go to work then don't! If you want to lockdown until a vaccine is found then do so!

Not great news but another drop in deaths 449 today going in the right direction, but as far as beating this virus still a long way to go.

Have you been going into your school during lockdown?

My daughter teaches in a primary school and is also the deputy head. She has been going in for key worker children etc and some days there has been more staff than kids.

No, I've got a medical history which means at the moment I am staying at home. My school is in a very deprived area so very few of the parents have key worker jobs.

I am speaking to all the children in my class, and their parents, each week along with setting them work to do although the take up is very limited. We are acting more as social workers to identify issues plus providing a bit of support to parents/guardians than teachers. Obviously each school varies.
