I agree with all of that. I understand why the PM had to call a recess for the HoC but one role of the HoC is to provide time for the opposition parties to question the PM and the ministers on policy issues. And at the moment there is no bigger set of policies than how the Govt is handling the current crisis. Unfortunately at the mo, the HoC is not sitting and the select committee processes are sporadic. And as a consequence there is no opportunity for the opposition parties to question the Govt on how the crisis is being handled or anything else for that matter.

We have an independent free press, the fourth estate, which has an important role in the democratic processes of our country. And it's right that the likes of the BBC Newsnight, Sky News, Channel 4 News and others have the opportunity to either question the Govt directly on what it is doing or highlight issues more broadly with the Govt's policies and the manner in which it is handling the situation. Whatever we might think of the style of Sophie Ridge or Emily Maitlis or Guru-Marthy or Andrew Marr, their role is to shine a spotlight on what the Govt is or isn't doing. And during a time when Parliament has been suspended, imo their role is even more important. That's why we have a free press. This isn't China or Russia; we are not yet an authoritarian state.

What ever happened to the PM's statement of 10 days ago on ramping up to 250,000 tests per day? Should he be toast as well?

He has said a goal of 100k testing by the end of April. He said that! He set his own goal now you must be an utter fool if you think in this crisis that if he's doesn't achieve the goal he set then of course pressure will be on him and like anyone that doesn't achieve their own target will be toast at some point.

They've clearly changed their target and Hancock said that the short term target is 100k but then it's still the 250k set.

What in gods name would be the reason. He already had good approval ratings the best in the democratic world. Even 22% of people who voted labour at the last election thought he was doing a good job. You only need to look at the last photos before he was admitted to see how Ill he looked

Things get on top of them, and the questions get a bit harder to answer, they create a distraction. This could be the ultimate straw man.

Wait a minute or two and someone on here will come up with the suggestion that his 'look' was down to the make-up dept...

I do actually think he’s ill, and I wish him luck. But some things don’t add up.

    Why say it then?

He still said that was the target 2 days ago.

If he doesn't get to that target by the end of the month of people think the journalist won't be gunning for him then you've your head in the sand. Rishi even said yesterday that's what Hancock target is.

Testing, testing, testing is one of the ways out of this lockdown and if it's not increased vastly then the pressure will be on him for sure.

You're the one going on about government ratings. If you think them rating some won't drop when's people have been lied to I feel we fail to achieve the 100k then you're in for a shock mate.

If anyone thinks the government, any government, from any country, isn’t practicing some sort of propaganda during a time like this to control the masses. Well, you’re just gullible.

It needed saying because the government and parts of the media are pushing the line that Covid 19 is a great leveller and we're all in it together. And that's bullshit. It's much easier for people in white collar jobs, or retired, in nice suburban houses with gardens and easy access to open spaces, to work at home and socially distance. And I include myself in that category. Those in manual jobs or inner city flats are hit much harder.
I applaud her for saying what needed saying.

I will bang on about Southerners, Northerners, Welsh, Scots or any other irresponsible dick heads that put others lives at risk.
Yes I don't think it is unique to the south of the country, there are irresponsible people all over the UK.

I think as with a lot of potential conspiracies, that the politicians involved haven't invented this and Boris is actually unwell (he's looked pretty shagged for a while tbf) but politicians are nothing if not complete fecking opportunists so will be making the most of this opportunity to take heat off themselves and govt as people are starting to ask difficult questions i.e why we still have PPE shortages.

What like spending 5.8m on letters to each household?

You can see they're using it as a point scoring exercise. Hiding being the scientists then covering each other's back like a Rishi yesterday. Rishi is no fool. He knows that's unless this lockdown ends soon he will be under massive pressure and also knows he messed up a little with this job retention scheme with the likes of Spurs shouldn't be able to claim it.

The lack of testing and PPE is an utter disgrace now but the biggest problem is this shouldn't be about politics and when you get people like @Park bantam@Park bantam quoting the government ratings you know that people just are not getting it. It should be about getting out of this mess as quickly and safely as possible.

Trump is using it to get votes also. All parties should standing and working together at a time like this and they're not. You only need to listen to a Rishi when he says"no government has done this before" it's all about point scoring and it's extremely sad when people are dying and the economy is about to blow up.
