    The Swindon link was an Alan Nixon (Sun journo) one from a few weeks ago, their manager had Doyle at Oldham but realistically I don’t think they could afford him.

    Not for me. He seems to have a good scoring record during his career overall but recently he seems to be in freefall ..

    2016/17 6 goals in 23 games
    2017/18 5 goals in 30 games
    2018/19 1 goal in 31 games

    Even though most of those games were in the Championship, he hasn't repeated his earlier form in the past three seasons. He may have arived as a foil for Doyle but I suspect he will turn out more as another McLean.

    Thats more like it, a proper City fan response! ;) To be honest Dennis we are probably getting him well beyond his best but man we are in League 2 and I think, as has been mentioned in other posts, this will lift the place (and most fans) and whatever you think GB has put down a real marker here. I am optimistic he will offer far more than we saw from McLean. Whispers I am getting is another striker is lined up and I agree with Fordy??:eek: that we will need to add a bit of pace to our frontline. Doyle situation is still far from clear and think our plan is to also add a younger loanee as well (front man) - but this probably wont happen until August.
    If Paudie was to return there is a real core of a team starting to emerge - we still definitely lack a bit of craft from midfield but to be in this position by mid June is good news, and this time the players have been chosen by the manager who is responsible for getting the best out of them. Keep it coming GB (and the Board) :thumbup:

    Donaldson of 5 years ago would have been a very good aquisition for us. But his success in the past has been largely built on his positioning and his acceleration. And when they start to go, there's not much which can be done. One injury and he could be out for a long time. Putting down a marker in recruiting an ex-Championship player and local lad might well send out a good message to fans etc but above all else, it's goalscorers we'll be needing next season. And based on his recent track record, Donaldson doesn't fit the bill for me.

    We are in league two. Nicky Maynard got 20 plus in this league. Luke Varney at 36 got 14 last season. Chris Porter at 35 got double figure s

    I think he will do well in this league

    The difference for me between Donaldson and McLean is that it sounds like Donaldson genuinely wants to be here and sees the challenge of getting his hometown club back to league 1 as perhaps his last hurrah in the game. He doesn't seem like the sort of player who has just come here to collect his last pay cheque - the club means something to him and I get the impression he is going to give it his best shot because he sees the chance to finish his career on a real high as the returning local hero.
    What could possibly go wrong?

    Is this the comment you're alluding to?

    “The reason I came to Bradford was that I still want to achieve things in my career. This was the perfect club for me to do that. Next season I’ll be looking to go on and get another promotion"

    That sounds very positive and the sort of thing I'd expect every player joining us to say.

    He's said a lot of positive things that make me think he genuinely wants to be here and do a job for us; for example, he's said he has always wanted to play for us and it has always been in his plans and it feels like 'a dream come true'. Like you say, all new signings say positive things - whether they mean what they say is a different matter though as last seasons recruits proved.

    It was Aaron McLean who made the comment I posted earlier and not Donaldson. The point I'm making is that it matters not one jot what players say on joining a new club as McLean and others have proven. All that really matters is how they perform within the team on matchdays and that we won't know for another 8 weeks in Donaldson's case. In the absence of seeing him in c&a, all we have to base an opinion on at the moment are his recent performances elsewhere and for the past 3 seasons (even in the Championship) it is a little underwhelming.

    At the end of the day, it's Bowyer who will have to justify this and other appointments. It's his neck on the block; not yours, not mine nor any other fan's. I wish it were otherwise but Bowyer won't get every transfer right unless he is unbelievably lucky. But based solely on his recent stats, the recruitment of Donaldson doesn't fill me with confidence at this stage.

    Totally agree. CD's remarks do seem very sincere. Much more so than the usual 'copy and paste' '' When ( insert current manager's name) came calling, for me it was a no-brainer''
