Reading into past clubs should be an indicator of what to expect from a player, but at this level it just isn't. One system change or positional tweak paints a different picture statistically and that's all fans can judge on before a ball is kicked. Look at Tyreik Wright, could barely start a match at any of his loans at Walsall, Salford & Colchester. Comes here in a system that works, only took 15 appearances and he gets a great financial move for him and our fans are clamouring for his return this summer.

Or Dan Agyei, the fan base will erupt with joy if he signs, but if we were linked with him 12 months ago it would be ridiculously sour, as he had 17 goals from 126 career appearances on his record. One good season and now if he joins you'll see "piss the league" tweets for the rest of the week.

At 23, it would be daft to write this one up as a bad signing before a ball is kicked. Hopefully he is another case of that one good spell lifting his career off and it happens with Hughes this season. Finally, it's an injection of pace in the squad which we massively lacked all last season.

    "Versatile" , "flexible" , "can also play ..." ,

All those comments fill me with absolute dread.

I remember getting pelters on here when making a similar comment when we signed Threlkeld but very rarely does a "utility" player ever make the required grade.

It’s the 6th June!! We’ve signed someone who is only 23 and has played numerous times in the Championship. I don’t care about his spell at Hartlepool. They were in a mess last season. Not a nice place for a young lad on loan to be.
Stop wetting your pants and wait to see what the rest of the summer brings. I bet when the season kicks off you won’t have heard who Wrexhams, MK dons or Stockports left back is. It’s league 2.. who were you expecting?

Just look how he was treat at Hartlepool by Curle, then the fool had the temerity to suggest he wasn’t inspiring. He played him at bloody centre back on some occasions. No wonder Barnsley pulled the plug.Would Hughes put Banks alongside Stubbs? No he wouldn’t. I’m open minded but Curle is a useless fool who happened to have been given the boot because he was garbage.
I make my own mind up of course we all do, however I won’t be swayed by Curles opinion.

We were so pedestrian last season.
I know nothing about Clarke but it would appear articles on line suggest the young lad apparently isn't short of pace something sadly lacking in our present contracted squad.
Hopefully we will get to witness this attribute next season.
Welcome to Bradford City Clarke let your feet do the talking and get this Senior out of his seat.
    Good Luck.

A signing with good indication that we are looking to answer the big issues we had from much last season:
    * lack of pace
    * lack of width (Wright and Banks aside)
    * a potential change in formation

Given virtually all of us know little to nothing about Clarke but on paper he comes part of solving some of the above, like to think we can all welcome him to the club and hope he has an impact somewhere even close to the two mentioned above.

Its all about the bigger picture. With a new season approaching its about learning from last seasons shortcomings, getting rid of players not good enough to work in a system and bringing in targeted transfers to raise the standards in areas that are lacking. For instance look at our two best players last season, one who wasn't even a starter in the system and another no one had ever heard of.
The transfer market isn't an exact science, you'll more than likely get more more signings wrong than right. And thats not to mean the players are necessarily poor, they might just not fit the managers playing style. So like with any signing he cannot be judged until he's had a few months to settle in. Even then circumstances can dictate it might take even longer, a classic example Mark Marshall, hardly seen under Parky but picks up the poty awards next season under Stuart.
If our recruitment department are on top of their game, the players we bring in should in theory take us to the next level of top three promotion spots as they've had a season to see the weak points.
Looking forward to see who else comes on board.

First signing so one of our top targets you would think. Not sure that fills me with confidence for what's to come, as this looks more squad filler than quality addition. Hope I'm proved massively wrong.

We are still in league two , or have i slept through a promotion.
Amazes me , that some of our fans , write a player off without actually seeing him play.
Who do they think we are going to sign at our present level.
Welcome to City Clarke, give your all, we don't ask for anything more .

i would move Chapman to reasonable, certainly better than the rest in the group of miss and he was a miss at the end of the season when injured.

Considering he played for them 20 odd times in a season says an awful lot about your Barnsley “supporting” mate. His goal kept them in the CC didn’t it?

Crikey look at how many have written this lad off before he has kicked a ball in anger in a city shirt.

Welcome to the club young man.

Mate is a Pools fan. His words: “shite. Couldn’t even get a game for us”

bit bizarre handing out three years to a lad who couldn’t start for struggling Hartlepool.

let’s hope he turns out better than Timi Osudina has proven……

Seriously underwhelming but we'll see. And another 3 year deal for an unknown quantity who's hardly pulled any trees up anywhere.

Be good to see a pacy left back who can also play further forward. I've no problem with the so called versatile tag

A bit of Championship experience and spent a few years at a good club in Barnsley.

I look forward to seeing him in action.

This idea that players can play in multiple positions technically is correct, it's only a bloke kicking a ball innit? But, as we know football is very position specific and if a player gets the dreaded 'utility' or 'versatile' added to his CV you can pretty much guarantee he can't hold down a regular position due to not being good enough for a specific role. Hence Halliday is signed as a right back, Stubbs, Platt and Crichlow as centre backs. In fact you could go through our whole squad with the same principle, Hughes has a specific way he wants to play and players should be signed to fit that strategy. Hence why players such as Sutton, Foulds, FCD, Staunton have been moved to pastures new, all able to cover positions due to not been good enough to be a starter. We need starters in the squad not players who fill gaps
