Why would they give us tariff-free trade and at the same time watch us undercut them with low regulations and tax dodges. If the tables were reversed we'd never allow that.

Can Japan or Turkey set their own taxes and regulations?

No reason at all which is why we should walk away and build our own trade and tax position,

But I am on the EU's side in this. And also the UK's. I voted remain and I believe that leaving the EU is absolute madness. We were told from the outset that we couldn't have a free trade deal without regulatory alignment and people like me have been saying this since before the referendum. We are going to be lumbered with enormously damaging tariffs because the fecking Tories want to sweep away all our employment protections, food standards etc and take us back to the 1950s.

The EU can do the deals it wants to with whoever it wants to. It's under no obligation whatsoever to give us the same deals as it gives other countries if it believes that would be harmful to it. We knew this from moment one. It's just that many people chose not to hear it, or to ignore it.

With all the advantages of a low manufacturing base, crippling trade tariffs with our biggest market and widespread international distrust of our integrity. Great. Good luck with that.

I don't know. And it doesn't matter. The EU is under no obligation to treat us the same as other countries. We can take it or leave it. Looks like we're going to leave it, to our enormous detriment.

Trade tariffs are not to be feared, we have them with our biggest trade partner in the USA and it is not a barrier to trade,
One of the biggest tariffs is cars which means the 2 million cars they import to us every year will be considerably more expensive and hit them hard

Let’s face it, the EU has had it’s day. It’s pretty much in its final death throws.
It’s an institution that works well in principal, when things are running smoothly - it’s been clinging onto ‘control’ for the last 10 years through bullying tactics.
We’ll be the first of quite a few to exit the project.

At this point there's no benefit in being on the EU's side in these things. The EU are relying on the division in this country to push us for a worse deal.

Lot's of people say things at the beginning of negotiations that don't play out in the end. But can we simply stop saying that countries HAVE to have these things to get an agreement when it's plainly not true.

The EU can give whatever deal it wants, as can we, and both sides can choose to accept it or not. If there is a no deal at the end it is the responsibility of boths sides.

Quite simply though there is no reason at all for us to accept a worse deal that other "lesser" trading partners who would then have better deals. If that's all that is on offer they're taking the piss and everyone in the UK should be happy we're not accepting that.

The main reason I was bitterly opposed to Brexit, and still am, just not as entrenched, is the wankstains selling it, I honestly still can’t work out why they’re still trusted by a significant proportion of the population.

Any benefits from exiting the EU, of which I’m sure there is some, will not be felt by me and you, guaranteed. They’ll promise a few scraps, and jam tomorrow, but tomorrow will never come.

Can't believe anything that comes out of their mouths anymore, its clear they are completely out of their depth. Just a bigger version of Bradford Council.

Anyone who imagined that a cabinet comprised of fourth rate idiots like Johnson, Williamson, Grayling, Hancock, Raab and Patel could form a competent government simply wasn't paying attention.

...the view of the otherside of the House wasn’t that rosy - Corbyn, McDonnell, Thornbury, Abbott, Lammy.
Hence we find ourselves where we are at.

Agree-the reason we have a tory Govt is down to Corbyn's neutral stance on Brexit. No way could people vote for a guy who didn't have a scooby doo what he wanted.
British politics is on a severe downward spiral. Along with Covid that leads to a long spell of shitty life ahead.

You voted for Corbyn-the man who had no clue which side of the brexit fence he sat on?

No, I voted for the Labour Party. I'm very glad that Corbyn is gone. We now have a competent adult leading the party, unlike the Tories.

The sad truth which i said some time back. Labours sheer utter incompetence allowed Johnson a clear route to downing street when in thuth he should never have been near the place and the present situation we find ourself in is down to Labour as well as the Tories. I've never known such a deep distrust of the political elite in this country.
