The way I saw it, albeit just the once, was Sarcevic "old manned" him. Knew he was directly behind and stopped to allow Odusina to just knock him forward slightly, which he then made a meal of by throwing himself face down. Totally unnecessary but most refs would give it.

 

And I said I agree, but linos will just see the ball go over his head and see him already in the other half and give it. The rule book says you can't but as I said, try telling that to blind linesmen.

 

All “clever” old players do it. Cook does it and gets less free kicks because he’s less subtle!

 

Grow up. You've seen enough matches to know exactly what I'm saying without your pathetic pointing and point scoring. If you actually read posts you'd see clearly I said make sure he is far enough into our half so he doesn't pass the halfway line before the ball.

 

You ain’t on the battlefield, so stop trying to win an imaginary war. You will feel far better and less stressed. I pointed out a clear rule of the game and you suggested we shouldn’t use that law of the game to OUR advantage because the officials might get it wrong…..Whaaaaat!

 

I can't believe I'm going to defend crap linos but............it's an impossible job in this scenario. They can't be watching 2 spots 50 yards apart at the same time. If they are watching the player clearing the ball at the moment he kicks it, they can't be watching where Wright is at the same time. They need to listen to the crowd more

 

OK I,LL bite. There are 2 linesman. One watches the edge of the area for offside and wether out of play. The other one is on the other side of the pitch watching for offside on the half way line. No need for 50 yarg guesses

 

I do believe you can be off side in your own half, and the free kick will be given in your own half. If a player is coming back across the halfway line from an offside position, he is deemed off side and the kick is awarded at the position he was in when he made the play on the ball. So you can (and do although very rarely) see an offside kick in the player’s half. Time for a cup of tea now.

 

This happened down at VP maybe a couple of years ago, crowd went mad but decision was discussed on here I think, don't ask for any more details 'cos can't even remember what I had for breakfast, but I was there (VP that is..!!)

 

Saying that Kevin, Smallwood worked his way cleverly, into the penalty box in the second half.
Two or three defenders clattered him but he stayed on his feet, trying to win the ball back.

He should have gone down like a sack o' spuds - would had got a definite penalty.
That's the difference between Sarovic (sic) and Smallwood - the Stockport lad played with his head.

Yes, I remember that well. I took it to extremes and asked my mate who's a qualified ref what would happen in this scenario. Say one of our midfielders plays a ball through to our centre forward and he's offside. The ball is intercepted. Our centre forward chases back but the opposition play the ball out to the wing. Our centre forward continues to track back into our penalty area. The ball comes in, the opposition head it towards goal and our centre forward kicks it off the line. Is he offside? My mate didn't know.

That's what happened in the game in question. Someone played a ball through to Charlie Wyke but it was cut out. He chased back into our half and tackled one of their players, playing the ball, and was blown up for offside about ten yards into our half. No one could understand it at the time.

 

Valid point. I do get the feeling we are trying to be “ above” that trickery, but if the team needs to play the dark art to grind out results like other teams…why not?
