Yes, it was unplayable at 11am, which is probably the latest call that reasonably could have been made. Only Mystic Meg could have said if it was going to be playable at 3pm and players safety must come first, so the independent official was right. The last thing we need is a broken leg due to a fall on an icy pitch. You can't pass a pitch on the basis that it may thaw out in the next four hours, especially as it's virtually dark by half time and will start to freeze again during the half time break, but this time with divots on it.

The answer, move the football season to March-November.
Would be much more enjoyable for fans.

Correct. I had already made the decision not to come to the game and watch it on TV. VP is unique in that it sits on a hill. Walking on black ice is not skill I have perfected, plus walking on black ice up or down hill in the dark is definitely not on.

Along with the warm air duvet/under soil heating for the pitch we also need a gritting team to make sure we can walk. It is always disappointing to have a match called off due to weather although I have some sympathy with @Faithful Bantam@Faithful Bantam view on this:)

I actually thought 11.00 a.m. was very late to hold the pitch inspection. I am sure @Loyalbantam@Loyalbantam will know that the suites open at Noon!

The heating will have had to be on for several hours beforehand. All that money which could have gone to the transfer fund (remember City were trying to save on fuel costs by moving the kick off time).

There will be the possibility that city will have to pay for the catering which would have been consumed. As most of it will have been prepared for Saturday. Had they called the game off say 24 hours before, the cost (again which could have gone into the transfer kitty) perhaps could have been saved.

The turnstiles usually open at 1.30 and the staff to operate them, the stewards, catering staff, announcers, St John's ambulance, Police, etc would have set off, to be in position. Again leaving it as late as 11.00 a.m. could have lead to the club incurring significant loss, which detracts from finance.

It isn't a simple exercise cancelling game.

Totally agree. I guess they were just so desperate to get it on that they took a (backfired) risk.

Totally against this, too many of this country's traditions are being lost.
We have lost one game to the weather so far this winter, not sure if we lost any last year.
Winter's are getting milder and wetter
Summer , holidays , cricket , rugby and more to pull fans away and reduce attendance and thus clubs income.
Boxing day attendances are always higher at most games. Total over reaction to a bit of cold weather.

No the over reaction is from the officials and governing bodies who don’t need much of a reason to cancel scheduled games.
What happened to our Boxing Day game last year? And the year before?

Covid is real and the players had covid in the camp last boxing day. Levi Sutton affected the most apparently.

You could say that the ‘over reaction’ is by a few, who despite several days/nights of sub zero temperatures, the players unable to train on grass, only two other games going ahead (one on the coast, the other with an elaborate/costly heating system), can’t accept that sometimes things have to be cancelled.

As I said, I wasn’t part of the inspection team, I didn’t go on the pitch, a professional assessor undertook that work.

If Andy Cook suffered a season ending injury because of playing on the surface, l think that would have gone down like a lead ballon!

If City had lost to a fluke goal due to ‘atrocious’ conditions, many would have been challenging the decision to play the game, ‘when obviously it should have been cancelled’!

If a supporter had been seriously injured, or worse, trying to get to the game (remember the issue with the Midland Road dangerous driver), again there would have been an uproar.

Yes you have had to miss one Saturday of football. Your ticket is still valid.

Unlike many on here, who travel substantial distances over long periods of time to get to VP, I guess you didn’t even set off on Saturday?

I presume you live locally, so the distance will not prevent you going to an evening match and you can be home in good time.

If not you will be able to watch it from the comfort of your home on I-Follow!

As most of the games were cancelled City are not at a huge disadvantage.

Perhaps you need to take a step back, and consider other peoples position. Take a wider look at the issue. Show an ability to take on other concepts/issues?

    A regrettable but inevitable postponement.

    Sometimes life is hard.

I think the previous case put by @Bigrod@Bigrod was pretty clear in outlining why matches get called off and why they need to be assessed sooner. Leaving the decision until an hour before KO represents a huge loss to the club in much more than playing time. If the pitch wasn't playable at 11am, it was never going to be be playable at 4pm when the second half kicked off.

To say it's an over reaction and a conspiracy is laughable. Player and fan safety come way before the annoyance of a few fans who can't accept their saturday plans being spoilt by a rational decision.

I guess he either wasn't at (or isn't old enough) to remember the 3rd Round FA up match at Telford in 1985 when we lost a match we (as runaway leaders of Division Three) should have won at a canter because it was played on a pitch that was frozen and totally unplayable.

Had saturdays match gone ahead, any advantage we had over a poor Rochdale side would have been totally nullified by the conditions. Much better to play it on a decent pitch in a month or so.

Are you suggesting it was a strategic postponement then?

in all fairness and for clarity, it matters not to me when the game is played as I’m lucky I live local with no evening work commitments and therefore I have no problem attending on a Tues night.

however, there were some on here that bitched and moaned about the possibility of playing games at 1pm because it somehow violated the terms and conditions of their season ticket.

    Jeez the hypocrisy.

Some Pratt getting a crown on his head day ;)

    What’s the difference?

I agree , matches scheduled for the day of the coronation should be played as scheduled. if you want to stay home and watch the king be crowned, fair enough, i would rather be at the match, just like i would rather be at VP on a boxing day or New years day, helps blow away the cobwebs .

No. I'm suggesting that the man who had the most in depth knowledge of it was playable, ie the referee, decided it wasnt safe to play on. A strategic postponement would have come on Thursday or Friday when the club had time to cancel the bookings made for hospitality and save the potentially tens of thousands wasted on a late postponement.

Totally disagree. It's a historic moment in our history and sport should take second place to that. Thankfully those in authority will be likely to agree and the match will be shifted to Friday or Sunday.

That’s the whole point you made on one sentence, it’s historic IF one believes it to be. If I don’t believe it to be historic, for example and I want to go to a / the game, that’s a choice I make and not one foisted upon me by some who may misguidedly believe it’s historic for perhaps sentimental reasons?

That’s NO different to telling people what religion they should follow.

I am not anti the royals, in fact i think they are part of our history and traditions, but that does nor mean i should be forced to give up something because of them. Freedom of choice , speach, its what this country is meant to be about.
There are millions of people in this country , who are not in favour of the Royal family. Should they be made to give up their day and take part?
