Let's break down that list:

- 5 of those were 30+ ageing forwards on their way down.

- 5 were youngsters with little to no first team experience.

- 7 of them you could quite easily label as panic signings.

Out of that list there's only Wyke and Jones who were both signed whilst in form and were genuine first choice targets.

Thats two out of a list of 27. And we wonder why we struggle to score goals every year.

 

Good summing up that. You have to look at the list and wonder why did we sign billy Clarke back?

 

I like Clarke, but you have to play him as a number 10 to get the best out of him which automatically limits the number of systems you can play. Then its an even more bizarre signing considering we signed Cooke and Evans too.

 

Well we all know that answer. It was an easy transfer. He's got good feet, and a decent shot, but I'm struggling to think what he brings to the team. He's played in the number ten role, but he's just not direct and effective enough for that position. He can't drop deeper into midfield as he doesn't have much physical presence, he can't play up front because he can't find the net, and he can't play on the wing, because he's lost his pace.
I really hope I'm not saying the same thing about Evans at the end of the season, but after Saturdays showing, if Stuart hangs him out to dry on the left wing, then he's going to go the same way.

All the talk is about young upandcoming players from the Prem getting some loan time, but I'd love us to sign an older, experienced pro, who's got a few seasons left in him before moving onto coaching/management whatever. Stick him in the centre of the park, make him captain, and play the game through him. It's what needed at the moment, as we're lacking direction and control all over the field.

 

Wes Hoolahan is a perfect example of this. At 38 people might have laughed when he signed for Cambridge in the summer but he has been different class so far and the game goes through him. He’s played all 5 league games and scored once and set 2 up. It was only 2 years ago he was linked to Rangers, his game has always been about getting o the ball and making things happen. Age doesn’t matter when he plays like that. Similar to Coppinger at Donny.

 

Wish we'd had pushed the boat out further for Ian Henderson instead of bringing in a loanee, look at what he's doing for Salford now.

Has Clarke even played up front this season?

 

Clarke hasn't played upfront since he left City the first time. He even said himself when he joined he is now more an attacking midfielder. Just looking through his last few seasons of stats, Plymouth & Charlton if he did play it was a Number 10. Grimsby either played him as a right mid or number 10.

We never seem to play to our strikers strengths though.

Yikes. As much as our three forwards seem ineffective, we'd be right royally buggered if they all got injured.

For me we should be having a talk to Zeli and see if we can come to an arrangement for him to go, it was said when he signed the lad could be a match winner "if we could keep him fit" cut our losses and hope he'll take a pay off by mutual agreement of course.

 

I agree. I remember listening to Greg Abbott, when he was doing some radio match summarising work last season. He basically said that he was surprised we'd signed him as it was pretty well known how injury prone he is.

 

I can never understand the signing of players with a history of being out injured, more than being fit. We’ve done this a few times now and never managed to work the oracle....
