So a good season but crikey Aston Villa away, Ipswich home and Boro away were so hard to take in such a short period of time

Makes the current issues seem nothing. That period hurt

 

They did it to stop Hendrie and it worked.

 

Only ourselves to blame I'm afraid, Villa away got bullies out of the game and the the Ipswich game at home, battered em and lost .

 

My first ever city game was Ipswich last game of ssn. Think we needed a point to finish 2cnd but lost 3-2 if I remember rightly then lost in PO's.

I bust my gut travelling from various contracts all over the UK for those last 7 games. So hurtful, still - In my mind. Yet a few have still questioned my commitments, since.
It remains unwavering, and as solid as ever.
It's hardly my fault I'm both old an now limited,

 

I think at kick off we need to win, but with other results going our way we only need a draw but we messed that up. I might be wrong though.

 

I think that is right.

I'd started a Saturday job at Asda Shipley by then, so listened to most of the game on a radio in the warehouse . Boss was Leeds fan, took the piss royally and I was so gutted.

We just ran out of steam at the end of the season.

Even though we lost, the Villa away game was brilliant. The atmosphere in the crowd was just phenomenonal. To be playing, as virtual equals, a team that had won the European Cup only a few years before was amazing.

I remember the Villa away game it was reported we had 6000 fans there that day sounded like 60000 got my nose broken by some thugs after the match. Boro away was probably the most disappointed I have ever been after a game at least I escaped uninjured more than I can say for a lot of our fans Was that the game that produced the infamous clash between Micky Kennedy and John Hendrie hard man was Kennedy

 

As the rumour goes .

 

Lost 3-2 and it cost us promotion could never understand why the Ipswich fans were so happy to beat us Quite a good following for them in the old Midland Road shed.
Strangely enough our scorers that day were Stuart and Greg
Rocket Ron Futcher was marked out of the game

 

Sir John Hendrie had wrongly been sent off the week before I believe at Man City and missed the Villa game.

 

I was right in line with the penalty area and it was never a booking never mind a straight red card

 

We’re still paying the price for it too.

 

He missed the Ipswich game at home but played in the Villa game. He should have scored too, I've found this short clip on youtube.

 

How are we still paying for it?

 

Absolutely cracking thread, some fantastic memories come flooding back from half a lifetime ago.
A massive character building period that younger fans will not relate to.
You really have to experience proper disappoitment like that to fully enjoy the good times.

 

I think that season cemented my life as a Bradford fan.

I'd been going fairly regularly since the 1985/86 season, but did loads of away games that season as well with my Dad: Blackburn, Sheffield United, Villa, Man City and West Brom all spring to mind. Great atmospheres and just good fun.

 

I remember getting locked out at Blackburn and then them letting some of us in, we were escorted down the players tunnel to our end.

 

That rings a bell. Some pretty disorganised policing and arrangements in those days.

Not sure if it was that season, but remember being with my Dad at Sheffield United and the police wouldn't let us out of the mass of Bradford fans being escorted back into Sheffield after the game, even though my Dad had parked the car in the opposite direction. South Yorkshire's finest...
