30 years ago today

And so began the clubs resurgence under big Geoff........until he lost his mind and almost destroyed the club.

 

Was that the season we got beat by Villa 1-0 away? If so what a day that was....

 

I remember that season well. I think we were the best side in that league by a country mile.

Didn't we play 'Boro 4 times and only lost the once....the first leg at VP was all us and they caught us with a sucker punch. Hates that club since :-/

I think that was the same season that Keith Curle and Andy Townsend were set to sign and take us over the finishing line.

 

I wouldn’t change it . Whilst we’re on a bit of a downer at the minute look what’s happened since that day, we’ve had some unforgettable days . We’re certainly one of the more entertaining clubs about and one only others can only dream about

 

I was behind the goal and Lee Sinnott did a back pass to Paul Tomlinson that went totally wrong and shaved the bar! it was a nervy match but we did dominate Middlesboro, and away we lost in extra time

i have also disliked middlesboro ever since, and hope they lose today...

thing is we didnt have john hendrie in the last match vs Ipswich as he was suspended, and the play offs we were down to the bare bones as had so many injuries, i was properly devastated after that play off defeat as it was the first season i started watching city at Valley Parade..

Remember seeing youngster dragged off their dad' shoulders by police for giving the middle finger salute then running battles back to the minibus yeah what a day

 

The uddersfailed down result wasen t that bad , we signed the legend that was Ian Banks on the strength of his goal .

 

One of the best atmosphere's I've been in.

And that is the game we screwed up !
I travelled over night from Hampshire - just to watch City throw it away, as Villa, took the spoils.
How different things could have been .............

 

Yes I believe as you say 3 points against Ipswich would have seen us promoted, the sad thing was be beat Middlesbrough twice that season and hadly gave them a kick in the first leg at Valley Parade then Trevor Senior got that all important goal that gave Middlesbrough a sniff, I honestly thought we would score at Ayresome Park as we were a free scoring side for much of that season, but to no avail on the night.
Even then Middlesbrough had to beat Chelsea as that was the format back in those days, but did and got promotion.

 

It might have been if they hadn't flooded the wings !

 

It was a bad night all round no love lost between both sets of fans, they started taunting us about the fire, and our lads retaliated with " whats it like to f##k your kids", after the Cleveland child abuse scandal, then the police kept us in for our own good we were told, they were right even thought the beat us in the game the Boro fans wanted to prove a point and they were all over the place waiting for us, luckily we were parked near the ground and got away with very few problems, but it was a long journey home that night.

 

We hired a car from the garage at Bankfoot , we did for all away games at that time . The asian owners face was a picture when we returned the car minus every piece of glass ( even the wing mirrors got smashed ).Yep was indeed a night to remember .
