All I can say is....
fecking Bernie Slaven.
So a good season but crikey Aston Villa away, Ipswich home and Boro away were so hard to take in such a short period of time
Makes the current issues seem nothing. That period hurt

Got me started now , we went to Stoke city and set a new world record for the most people ever in a hired Luton transit van , we won 2 - 1 .After the game we got chased by a group of their fans . I ran into a pub car park and jumped over a low wall at the bottom of the area ---- 10ft drop into the river , to be fair to them they stopped dropping stones on me when i faked drowning.

Absolutely cracking thread, some fantastic memories come flooding back from half a lifetime ago.
A massive character building period that younger fans will not relate to.

I'd started a Saturday job at Asda Shipley by then, so listened to most of the game on a radio in the warehouse . Boss was Leeds fan, took the piss royally and I was so gutted.
We just ran out of steam at the end of the season.
Even though we lost, the Villa away game was brilliant. The atmosphere in the crowd was just phenomenonal. To be playing, as virtual equals, a team that had won the European Cup only a few years before was amazing.Stop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... After the Villa game we got diverted south down M6 , i knew the area so directed him on to the A38 through Burton , Derby onto M1
Instructed mini bus driver to head for Chesterfield for a few quiet pints . What i didn't realise was our good friends from Leeds did the same . We had a wonderful " debate " for the rest of the evening till the Police arrived , oh to be younger again .WilsdenBantam, punk bantam, Bantamsteve and 1 other person like this. -
I remember that season well. I think we were the best side in that league by a country mile.
Didn't we play 'Boro 4 times and only lost the once....the first leg at VP was all us and they caught us with a sucker punch. Hates that club since :-/Hulmebantam, bantamdave41 and Offside like this. -
I think that was the same season that Keith Curle and Andy Townsend were set to sign and take us over the finishing line.

I'd been going fairly regularly since the 1985/86 season, but did loads of away games that season as well with my Dad: Blackburn, Sheffield United, Villa, Man City and West Brom all spring to mind. Great atmospheres and just good fun.Stop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... Click to expand...Bronco, Seasideman and Nick_W_ like this. -
I was behind the goal and Lee Sinnott did a back pass to Paul Tomlinson that went totally wrong and shaved the bar! it was a nervy match but we did dominate Middlesboro, and away we lost in extra time
Ormondroyd just missing in the 6 yard box at the end
i have also disliked middlesboro ever since, and hope they lose today...
thing is we didnt have john hendrie in the last match vs Ipswich as he was suspended, and the play offs we were down to the bare bones as had so many injuries, i was properly devastated after that play off defeat as it was the first season i started watching city at Valley Parade..Hulmebantam and Bronco like this. -

I travelled over night from Hampshire - just to watch City throw it away, as Villa, took the spoils.
