David Sharpe appointed Head Of Football Operations

We should 100% benefit from Sharpe, as long as we don't hamstring him through sparks or rupp trying to do things for a fiver and a packet of crisps. Hopefully just the first step of Rupp delivering what he's promised

 

Oh I don’t know it helps to think of who is doing what and when. It would be my view that he is in charge of all things football, but I could be wrong.

 

Will be interesting to see the player response to his appointment over the next few games. Perhaps I am getting too cynical.

 

Is there any way we can get a fresh thread to welcome David to the club, as the conversation seems to be spread over a couple of threads, including speculation that we now know the answer to?

 

Wonder whether this appointment is the reasoning behind the (alleged) strop from Cook?

 

This is a very promising move, and arguably makes more sense than installing him as a DoF right away. Given his past, I'd assume he'll be here for a couple of seasons at least, but it remains to be seen if he lasts any longer than that.

He seems to be well-connected, is a data miner by all accounts, and while I don't know a lot about him, his appointment perhaps suggests that the club are going to look to 'invest' their way out of League Two, at least per previous comments on this forum from people that have had contact with David. Reading both between the lines and direct comments, he sounds ambitious and his methods might be quite expensive.

The introduction of the role is very much needed, and his CV is sound. On the face of it, its 100% the right thing to do.

I'm still reserving judgement though - not about this appointment, but in terms of whether its just the start of material change at the club, or akin to putting lipstick on a pig.

 

Sounds a good move for us tbh.

Like others have said, this stinks of our CEO doing his research and settling for a “close” friend. Hope I’m wrong but not convinced.

 

Perfect scenario would be to bring him in as CEO, drop Sparks back to head of commercial activity and replace Gent with someone like Jewell as a Dof/ Head of Recruitment.

 

Oh dear, Kev's not going to be happy. He's talking about us needing a plan.

 

I doubt it, he has more experience and success than Sparks could hope for. It would be like David Brent bringing in Alan Sugar because he was a mate, and expecting to cling on to control.

 

First job is to make sure there are no more hooped shirts ... next...?

 

I still don’t really understand what his role is? If he’s reporting to Gent and Sparks, then it’s them who say yes or no (to what?). And he’s “alongside” GA…so what does that mean? I don’t really get it.

 

I suspect he will report directly to Rupp.

 

It’s called saving Sparks blushes! It was only at the BBC Leeds interview he said he had considered a DOF role but didn’t think it was necessary. Well here he is, and I suspect Sparks didn’t have much of say in the matter apart from who we bring in.

 

If he is head of all football operations, that surely means Gent reports to him, not the other way round.

 

I'm interested to hear an in depth interview with him regarding where he stands on:

- how important it is to focus on youth development
- the style of play we currently play, whether or not that's our long term style of play, and/or how we might get to a preferred style of play (AND STICK WITH IT)
- what the Summer transfer window might hold
- what, if anything, he sees as important to implement from his time at Mansfield and Wigan

But yeah.
