It's also true though. He didn't become friends with Colin Doyle 6 months ago!

The disappointment for me us that we had a strategy that has worked in bringing in Lewis and selling on for profit so why not do it again?

 

So Parker this morning saying not only were we looking at Walker in the summer when Barnsley were interested in Lewis, Carlisle and 2 other league 2 clubs also registered an interest. Begs the question why none of those clubs decided to sign him, given he was a free agent at the time.
He also suggests the fee for Lewis was around 200k.

 

I was thinking this yesterday. Some were alluding that Walker would actually be good if not better in some ways than Lewis. Better mention this to Carlisle who thought it better to spend a transfer fee on Lewis when they could have had Walker for free.
I'd prefer us to move on and get behind Walker now if just that it puts boring journalism to bed.

 

Just one word. Circumstance.

Carlisle will see Lewis as an investment. And they have the money to buy him. If we had the option of a younger player that we had to pay for versus an older player for free, but we can afford to pay for the younger player then you would always sign the younger lad.

We've signed Walker because we lost Lewis. Carlisle had the option of both and could afford Lewis.

Doesn't make Walker a worse player but we're unlikely to be able to flog him for money in the future. But if he's a good keeper, that doesn't matter really.

Charlton DID sign him, albeit as cover. I'm pretty sure they wanted to keep him.

Look if it was any other position and he's only played 50 games in 5 years then I'd be worried. As he's a keeper, it doesn't matter. It's difficult for a keeper to regain a place once lost. And to go on to another club and become number 1.

 

I think he was referring to Lewis, not Walker, with the summer interest.

 

He probably isn't a bad replacement, only time will tell. That circumstance you talk of, that can be summed up like this quite simply.
Carlisle have new owners willing to fund the signing of players they see as being able tltake them forward, we don't.

I assume down to finances, but surely we should have signed him in the summer to provide competition to Lewis?

I presume GA hasn't had much say in him coming here then, It would be interesting to know who GA would have liked to see us target.

 

GA saying that he had no idea what the figure for Lewis was in yesterdays presser and this one seemingly a deal we re-visited rather than consulting the new manager for a take is a bit worrying. Even the shop is running with a head of recruitment, surely he has to run signings by the manager to make sure he works with the plan of action GA has? I know for a keeper it is a bit easier to fit a peg in the hole, but even at our level there are these ball playing goalies creeping in over the last few years.

In my mind it’s obvious why they chose one of what they think are two equally capable keepers out of the bottom of the EFL ? They think Lewis being younger could or could not be an investment ( high risk) compared to Walker who wouldn’t ( No risk) . That’s why we will have a decent sell on clause on top of the fee whatever it is.

Honestly , I think Lewis has hit his playing ceiling and unlikely to improve further , his distribution to the flanks / wing backs is very poor, oft sailing into the stands and he’s error prone , like all L2 keepers as we have seen quite a few times.

I could be wrong of course , but that’s my thinking.
