Some pretty one dimensional comments on here tbh.
I’m not condoning what Hamas have just done at all. But if Israel hadn’t been illegally occupying their country and systematically persecuting their citizens for decades then support for desperate measures like this would soon wither away.
There are internationally agreed borders which Israel refuses to accept. All the while they continue to illegally colonise a neighbouring country there will never be peace, and horrific violence (by both sides) will continue.

…there are reasons why it is happening. There’s a big difference between condoning something and recognising the reasons why it is happening. I’d expect an intelligent poster like you to make that distinction.

Do you think that it’s ok that Israel keeps colonising further and further into Palestinian territory on the premise of some crackpot right wing religious belief in the destiny of the Jewish peoples, displacing its citizens from their legitimate homes, built a fricking Great Wall annexing big chunks of Palestinian land and has its army routinely harassing and arresting Palestinian citizens in internationally agreed Palestinian territory? And, would you expect us to lie down and just accept that if it were happening to us?

 

No i don't think its right what Israel are doing but then i don't go on the streets enthusiastically waving the flag of Israel when an apparent atrocity is carried out on the West Bank. I don't want to see labour MPs banging the Palestinian drum as much as i don't want to see Tories backing the Israeli regime.
I live a very simple life, i have no religion in my life and have little interest in the liars and cheats of politics. I'm sick of this idea of having to take sides or people trying to play top trumps in how someones argument is morally more upstanding than others.

 

That also sounds very one dimensional if you're being honest with yourself.

Clearly it's a very complex situation and depending which side of the fence a person happens to fall on seems to be how they apportion the blame.

One thing is for certain though, I can't see a resolution any time soon.

 

It’s absolutely a very complex situation. If you parachute a new nation state onto a territory that has been inhabited by a set of people for a thousand years then it’s bound to cause resentments. But I’m not denying the right of the Israeli state to exist, nor minimising the vulnerability they feel, surrounded as they are by countries they perceive as hostile to them.
But, unfortunately, Israel has been governed for years by a hardline government that is reliant on even more hardline orthodox Jewish groups who have extreme views about Jewish destiny based on their fundamentalist reading of certain scriptures. So those people who condemn Muslims for their support for Palestine need to also acknowledge the religious bigotry that is fuelling illegal Israeli expansionism and driving ordinary innocent Palestians out of their homes.

I think it’s analogous to the Irish situation. I’ve always believed that there should be a united Ireland, but that doesn’t mean that I supported IRA violence. Likewise, I believe in the right of Palestinians to live in peace in their own territory without being bulldozed out by militant Israelis. But that doesn’t mean I support Hamas blowing up innocent Jews.

 

Have they had a rally down outside City Hall in support of Palestine? I remember this council flying the Palestine flag at City Hall and it wasn't long since the last rally down there.

I'm not going to even pretend to know the history of the region but it seems many are simply out for political point scoring rather than actually caring about the innocent people who have been either taken hostage or murdered.

Rishi Sunak says UK is ‘poised’ to offer Israel military help if required (msn.com) if this article has any truth in it you're idiot Sunak, do we want to go back to the days of the IRA days with bombs being placed in the likes of night clubs anywhere that large crowds of people gather.

 

Israel is one of the richest countries in the world and have a nuclear weapon arsenal. Sunak is quite quick to hand out our money to all and sundry.

 

I'm really worried about the Palestinian supporters in the UK, I accept these people don't need an excuse but for me in this particular situation we shouldn't be poking these sort of sympathisers with a stick, I do hope I'm wrong the IRA incidents starting in the 70s was a very difficult time do you give into these people and stop at home or go out as usual, our lot did the second be to say it wasnt nervy at the time I'd be lying.
