You cannot say that selling a player weakens the club until you see who replaces him.

Not sure what Love being 2yrs older has anything to do with it. You were saying Riley was a good signing because he played for Man Utd u23s and only Valencia and Darmian kept him out.

I merely pointed out that he also had Love and Varela in front of him too. Man Utd have had lots of young lads that have dropp d out of football after being let go and failing elsewhere

No didnt say any of that. Go back and re-read. You have either got ahead of yourself again or making stuff up to suit your agenda. It really is bizarre you cannot read and understand a post.

Man Utd have also let lots go who have had decent careers.

    Very true.

Liverpool fans were upset and angry when Suarez left. But that had been forgotten when they say how good Coutinho was. They were pissed of again when he left last Summer. Salah signing and performing how he did, git those fans forgetting again.

We, meanwhile, are looking to sell our assets but replace them with youthful, less talented and a higher potential kids. Not quite the same thing.

Had we sold Clarke and signed Oztumer or Dack as the replacement, then fair enough. But signing a kid who has only ever had a 5mth purple patch is not improving us

You didn’t say any of that? So you at no point have said Riley is a good signing (for L1 level)? And you didn’t say he only left because he realised he was never going to get a shot when they had Valencia and Darmian in front of him?

Like I said, all true comments (and I did understand them), but he isn’t some kind of wonderkid that some have made out. My point about Love and Varela are that they got more chances at the club and secured good moves.

Let’s face it, if Riley was as good at 21 as Love was, he wouldn’t have signed for a L1 club with no manager in place.

As for your last comment, can you name just 3 of those players released by Man Utd that gave come good elsewhere in the last 5yrs

You really should have gone back and read my original post before making yourself look stupid. I have re quoted and highlighted the key points of what I said for your benefit.

Why the last 5 years??? And Riley was only released because he wouldn't move to us last summer. If he had chosen too, then there would have been a fee involved like numerous others. Man Utd released Nick Powell in 2016, he has done ok. Ben Amos has played over 50 Championship games since leaving Man Utd a few seasons ago. You could go back even further to James Chester and Tom Heaton. It is not just exclusive to Man Utd players anyway - plenty have left Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City etc and done ok.

It might improve us if his " higher potential" is realized

You could say that about any player. Its up to him to realise that 'potential' nobody can do it for him, remember not every signing the club makes will work. Peterborough are rightly lauded fpr their approach to buying and developing young talent but anyone remember Luke James? Yeah, the lad on loan to us from Posh who showed nothing. They paid £500,000 for him, he can't even get a gig at a lower league 2 club now. McCartan may well go the same way if he doesn't buck his ideas up.

Totally agree it's down to the player to realise their own potential. That's why it pleases me to see the likes of Jones putting the effort in over the summer in Dubai, and Riley training whilst on his hols in Mexico.

Seems then they have a bit of a 'scatter gun' approach, hopefully we'll be a bit steadier.

Their ‘scatter gun’ approach has seen over £10 million brought into the clubs coffers. If you are looking for a strategy that is going to fund your clubs development as opposed to funds from the owners then you are going to have expect that not every player will turn a profit. Speculate to accumulate. We might find that some profit on sold players is offset by losses on others.

    Not to intrude on sergio pinto and boingboing's little quarrel, there is a player who left man utd as a youngster and went on to better things;

His name is Danny Drinkwater and he went on to pick up a premiership league winners medal and has played for England
    youth and senior teams.
Career stalled at chelsea but if he can start afresh, would look good in the centre midfield for England as he can pass and close down the other team's main schemer.

Yeah, you probably shouldn’t have intruded, seen as you’ve completely missed the point. Nobody has said players leaving Man U don’t go on to have successful careers elsewhere. I said that the majority of players RELEASED do not make it.

Drinkwater was rated at Man U and had a few loan moves before Leicester paid them “an undisclosed fee” for his services. Not quite the appropriate example to negate RELEASED players making it elsewhere, right??!

To be honest you still owe me an apology for misquoting me.

Can we just point out that Joe Riley wasn't really 'released' as you would have us believe.......he did sign a professional contract with the club and that expired. He wasn't some 17/18 year old kid that never signed pro terms.

Drinkwater was under contract when Leicester paid a fee. Let's agree Drinkerwater would have been RELEASED had they not.

Firstly, I’m not convinced I did misquote you. You said he left because he realised he was behind senior players such as Darmian etc. I merely pointed out there were others too that had kept him out of even appearing on the bench in their League Cup games - games that the names I listed were given a chance in. At no point did I “quote” you...!

Moving on to the point you make about Drinkwater, what evidence do you have that he “would have been RELEASED had they not (accepted a fee from Leicester)”. More subjective guff from you with zero evidence to back it up.

Finally, Riley WAS released. His contract at Man U ended and he wasn’t offered a new deal. That in football terms IS being released. Or are you trying to tell me that McMahon wasn’t released by us????

Having watched 2 firm fans favourites in the useless Brunker kid and Callum "Cannot play any football at all" Guy, I can only hope Greg lands lucky with such an exciting player as an L2 Drinkwater.

Thought I’d reignite this thread as we’ve seen a few incomings of real quality recently, I’d now go for this:-

    3-5-2

    O’Donnell

    McGowan
    O’Conner
    Killgallon

    Scannel
    Akpan
    Payne
    Wright
    Robinson

    Miller
    New striker

    Or 4-4-2

    O’Donnell

    Riley
    McGowan
    Kilgallon
    Wood

    Scannel
    Payne
    Akpan
    Seedorf

    Miller
    New striker
