There are some managers who you can have patience, indeed sympathy and understanding, with in difficult times. And there are others, sadly, whose personalities do them no favours at all. Grayson, for example, fell in the latter category.

Be careful Jon that would take a legitimate plan, not just lip service.

Tbf although I agree with you to play devils advocate we didn’t transition to badly at all from Parkinson to McCall and they had a totally different style of play. Sometimes it’s not a bad thing to have a pragmatic manager weed out the crap before allowing someone with more of a ‘purist’ football manager to come in and take over.

Too right. Luck was Paul Simpson hitting the post for Wolves in 99. Over 46 games we won promotion fairly, as does almost everyone (apart from Bolton)

D Mac redefines the phrase 'odious gob shite'. Last season on one of the podcasts he said that the only manager who could get Salford promoted was Evans. Jeez knows what one of them has got on the other ....D Mac did of course sack Evans at Posh. Weird stuff.

No, I agree, the first 12 months of Stuart's leadership after Parky were pretty good. An improvement in real terms, with us reaching the play off final and all.

We could dig into the why's and wherefore's, but there's not much point. It worked.

The only clear difference between the Parkinson-McCall handover was that McCall inherited a successful squad. As it stands, that won't be the case for the next manager, and that's where we need to be very shrewd, very calculated, and very clever as a club. If it doesn't work out for Adams, the next manager needs to be one who can quickly and readily pick up the pieces and work with what he's got, because there are plenty of City fans who just don't want to afford any manager the time unless they get it right straight away.

Sparks comes out of hibernation to discuss his first 12 months as CEO and the progress made since last winter and the disappointment of our recent run.

Another difference between the Parky-McCall handover, and where we are now, is the quality of players that came into the squad.

    Screenshot_20211203-065556-663.png

I know Vuckic didn't add much (although he has progressed) and Marc McNulty didn't get going, but the rest were very solid, experienced footballers along with one highly talented youngster.

Compare that level of recruitment, albeit in league one, with where our current crop of players were recruited from.

Whoever was in charge of recruitment at that point in time knew what they were doing. Or they were lucky. I tend towards the former. Partly because there was a degree of vision in the recruitment, although this can be seen with the luxury of hindsight.

DA, or whoever else manages us in the current regime, is not going to get anywhere close to that kind of quality relative to League Two football. I would argue we lacked a vision in the handover to DA. Hence no one seems to know, or want to admit publicly, who was responsible for recruitment in the Summer.

I'm really frustrated with the club, because yet again we are scratting around, looking clueless, in the lower reaches of division 2. That was completely avoidable.

But, right now, we feel a long way away from even challenging in this division. It isn't just the poor run, it is seeing the team crumble within a match. It is seeing other managers make tactical changes in a game, that we seem unable to counter.

The footballing mindset in the club appears broken. It is going to be very hard to change this if we are trying to do this within a break-even/self-funding model. From a business perspective, that makes sense. However, there will always be clubs who, at a point in time, that have a bit of money and, it appears, a vision that surpasses ours. It will take a lot of luck for us to outperform those over the course of 46 matches, with our current structure and ownership.

that’s the big issue now our support is so impatient now don’t get me wrong with that level of support we should be doing better .......... but until whatever is going on behind the scenes is fixed then this will keep going on ......... there needs to be a long term vision surely now the owner or the ceo man at see that ???
Think the January window is now crucial going forward because if nothing major goes on then whatever Sparkes come out with in the summer won’t stop thousands of season ticket holders going missing.

Guess at that point he was happy to have a shiny new train set and the people needed to run it. Shame he ended up wanting to be the train set.

If you hit the stop button as you load it you can read the article before the pay wall loads.
To save you the bother it’s a load of cliches. Doesn’t see a problem, money there to spend in January, blah blah blah.

Sparks has run a few ideas up the flagpole and Adams is saluting them, there’s some low hanging fruit to be picked, the club isn’t sailing in financially choppy waters, a bit of blue sky thinking has been done out of the box and there are some circles to be squared in January. Wembley is our Wembley this season. Or something

In all seriousness it was Greg Abbott who was brought in as Head of Recruitment when McCall was appointed.

Part one doesn't tell you anything you don't already know. Says a lot of things that are correct gift-wrapped with a nice we want promotion mantra. Column filling at its best.

Adams and Sparks will be judged in the course of time. The article is nice and fluffy and 'wonderfully warming' on a cold winters morning.

    As for Rupp, feck off.

Is sparks taking the Mick here?

"With all due respect, we didn’t disappoint last January when we needed to act".

In January we signed or borrowed Danny Rowe, Oliver crankshaw, Jordan Stevens, romain burrell and Will Huffer all of whom are no longer here, and to them you can also add matty foulds who originally couldn't get a look in, and is only just beginning to find his feet

The departures were welcome last year but only two of the seven arrivals could be regarded as any form of a success
