Match Thread Home V Bolton Sat 6th March. 3pm kick off.

Same here, properly cheered a goal out loud for the first time in a long time.. and the club needs a hero like Danny..

 

Would really like to see Evans back in the side, probably for Vernham. Better at retaining possession and linking play between defence and attack - something we have been missing sorely since sides figured the high press on our defence and Watt is so effective at cutting our threat down. Vernham has not shown he can help with this consistently and apart from on 2/3 occasions has not beat his man which would be another reason for retaining his threat. Cranshaw has offered more offensively and in terms of work rate for me.

 

We are second in the form table, they are tenth. We've picked up 16 points from our last 6 games, they've got 10. They have just lost their leading goal scorer for the rest of the season. We have a game in hand on them.
Whilst it's still a big ask, it isn't out of the question and I'm surprised a man who never shuts up about the need for us to have a winning mentality is dismissing the possibility so easily.

 

And we've still to play them again and have a game in hand

So that gap could be down to 1pt

It's not them I'm worried about, Exeter (who have games in hand) and Cheltenham look the two best teams in this division and there's Bolton and Cambridge. Tranmere could struggle for the play-offs themselves

 

I agree about Crankshaw one or two have taken a dislike to him I thought he was our best offensive player yesterday and covers for Wood as well. Vernham looks really dangerous in patches but drifts in and out. Cooke could do with a rest I would slot Evans in there if he is fit

 

Think the big problem was in midfield. Our 3 are still relatively young and this constant Saturday/Tuesday looks as though it may have caught up in the last 2/3 games. They look physically and mentally knackered. Bolton on the other hand, had good midfielders whose season only started in January.

Vernham has definite potential but needs to retain possession and play the simple ball earlier more often. All about decision-making. Sometimes seems a little head down and hell bent on doing it himself. The best players pick and choose their moments. There was a moment yesterday when Vernham and Crankshaw were both in the same corner. Easy lay off to Crankshaw available to make the cross, came to nothing as either didn't see it or choose it. It will come with time though - both have not played regular football this season I don't think.

If I were an opposition manager at the moment I would be playing the high press all the time. Watt is good, but won't skip the press and too many hurried passes are going astray as a result.

T&S need more time with the squad away from this busy schedule - I am not sure this is necessarily the system we would favour going forward and with a few different personnel.

Exciting times though.

In about a month or so the bizarre results will start to happen, moreso probably this season as the matches have been so compacted. Every team will have problems with injuries, fatigue and suspensions, so all we should do is carry on as we have been and see where we end up. Speculation about final positions is completely pointless at this stage. Still an awful long way to go. The table after the Easter fixtures will be the first to give a preliminary indication as to how it might pan out.

 

Thought Bolton played very well but lucky to get a point, The goal they scored was a lucky fluke where ours was a superb strike,
As for resting players they will want to play every game when on a good run, They are not tired just sometimes you can not be at your best every game, If the managers are any good they will play players through it unless injured

Genuinely good luck for the rest of the season, just hope our paths do not cross again and when do it will up a division for us both and I can have a few Saltaire Blondes in the Record Bar.

No, because I knew with the new owners ambition and a new manager who had won promotion with Barrow that they would be a force even if like ourselves it needed more players in his first window
