sorry to cut and paste but I couldn't copy the link. I would agree with you that deaths in intensive care sounds more credible, but that's not what was reported:

The biggest study of Covid-19 patients in the UK shows a third admitted to hospital have died.
Just under half have been discharged, with the rest still being treated.
Prof Calum Semple, the chief investigator from the University of Liverpool, said the "crude hospital fatality rate is of the same magnitude as Ebola".
He said around 35-40% of hospitalised Ebola patients die.
"People need to hear this... this is an incredibly dangerous disease."
Nearly 17,000 patients from 166 hospitals were part of the study. Obesity and age both increased the risk of death.
The study also confirmed that men are more likely to have severe disease, and the gap between outcomes for men and women gets wider with age.

Nobody knows anything at this stage, we found out at the same time as I’d imagine everyone found out.

Difficult to read too much into it as a statement, but it’s obvious that something’s going to have to give. The unions at BA though are very strong, so I’d imagine nothing will be signed off without an almighty fight.

    Thanks.

You’re right, it’s horrendous. The aviation sector is going to be one of the hardest hit, but I’ve got a feeling that the furlough scheme is effectively keeping this country on life support.

Even as a Labour man myself, I have to commend the government’s response - but there’s a big sword of Damachles, in that once the scheme is discontinued, it’s going to be carnage. And the government knows that it can’t go on forever.

That is it. They have about another 10-14 days before they have to start official consultations, before current end of furlough scheme. Leak to the press to get reaction and a bit of unofficial discussions before the start of any consultation period, or an extension of the furlough scheme again

Yep. When they were furloughing we were finding out more information through watching Sky News than we were in our inbox. Thankfully I’ve not been furloughed, but it looks like the unions managed to negotiate a fairly ameliorated package.

Any consultation period would have to last a legal minimum of 45 days, so the whole company will be walking on eggshells for at least the next couple of months. All the while we’re having to bring in as much revenue as possible in the thickest of selling environments.

Not really. When you consider only those with the most serious cases are going to hospital it makes sense.

There's actually data coming out at the moment where major studies have been conducted with blood tests that suggest the death rate form COVID-19 is actually less than 1%.

I do still find it shocking. Any one would hope that if it was so bad you were hospitalized, you would hope to have a better chance than that of coming out the other side

Even the ones who do come out, a length of time on a ventilator has serious effects on people afterwards

Western governments will say some shite about getting tough with China. They’ll tell us to do one, and the rest of the world will lump it, because Globalisation and free market capitalism go hand in hand. Give it a couple of years after this is finished, and we’ll be doing things as normal with China, people like their cheap stuff Home Bargains. Money talks.

A few cases been confirmed today on the island i’d only heard one or two unconfirmed reports prior to this, seems unfortunately it’s centred round one of the care homes. Compared to most we’re in a pretty lucky situation if it can be kept away, fingers crossed it doesn’t spread although I guess that’s difficult within a care facility. People were saying areas like this would be behind a bit, hopefully things won’t relax too much and non essential travel to the island will be kept on top of (i’ve not seen much evidence myself of tourists when i’ve been driving to work, but the usual FB judge and jury say different).

Can't disagree with that but surely the families of the people around the world who have lost their loved ones sometimes prematurely have a right to know how this pandemic started, was it the wet market in Wuhan or something more sinister an experiment that went wrong.
Without doubt it will be history for future generations to read about but we have to have answers, although you are quite right buying British would have no effect on the growth of a country like China and it will be business as usual given time.

Just under 1% of our population is 500,000 people.
