Lets see what the next 2 weeks brings in Bradford, because if there are places primed to blow then it's inner city Bradford + BD3 & BD9.

Not for me , they can go, average UK life expactancy is 81, only a very small % past that have a good quality of life. Do people want/expect to live forever? Never mind live well. Past 80 & you've had a good run.

I would hope that after all this, that the NHS stops keeping people alive and all this sanctity of life bollocks is consigned to history and we just let people go when it is their time. Even better, help some on their way, those who previously requested that help. Nobody wants to die after months in a hospital bed or hooked up to tubes 24/7. How much money & pain would society save if we could just turn latter stage alzheimer sufferers off?

MIL's cancer treatment has stopped, just like that, I understand it as she is 80 but it's stopped or being postponed for much younger patients too at the mo, to possibly save elderly Cov-19 patients? This this is not right.

On the other hand we are lucky it didnt start in Russia, they'd still be denying it, never mind sharing data..

You are still the biggest clown on here I see.

You say that the NHS should stop keeping people alive, but isnt that what they were doing with your poor mother-in-law, by treating her awful cancer?

What gives you the right to play god and say that over 80's have had a good innings and they can go?

Thank you Idle, comforting to know you are mod supported in your choice of words.

Hospitals are full of people who will have no quality of life ever again, they are a huge drain on the NHS's resources, resouces that could better be spent on people who may, if they could get treatment in time, have a long & fulfilling life in front of them.

If the law will not allow people with debilitating conditions to take there own lives I would not force Doctors etc to play God and make the decisions to take peoples lives,
They take the Hippocratic oath that is all about keeping people alive a very slippery slop mate, my mother never wanted to be resuscitated and signed a form to say as much when her time came.

How do you expect other posters to respond when you make such mind-boggling statements? I recall my mother being in hospital several years ago in her 80's puting a drain on the NHS resources as you so politely put it. With the skills and care of the doctors and nurses doing the jobs they were trained to do, she recovered and was discharged. And now in her 90's she's still reasonably active although you would probably call it not having any quality of life. So I suggest you keep your enforced euthenasia nonsense to yourself!

I agree with all that, and is why I made a comment in my post, conveniently ignored by dunderhead. If I got ill and there was just one ICU bed left and a younger person needed it, that'd be fine by me.

I'm pleased that your mum is in good health. If anybody has a one size fits all outlook, it's you. You're the one who said that people in their 80's have already had a good run; how people have no quality of life in hospital and are a drain on NHS resources. That's insensitive nonsense and I hope when you're in your 80's needing expensive hospital treatment, you aren't treated by hospital staff with a similar view to your own.

    And equally good news here,
    https://amp-theguardian-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/29/ventilator-challenge-uk-to-start-production-in-covid-19-fight?amp_js_v=a3&_gsa=1&usqp=mq331AQFKAGwASA=#aoh=15855690462319&referrer=https://www.google.com&_tf=From %1$s&share=https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/29/ventilator-challenge-uk-to-start-production-in-covid-19-fight
This new design is not as invasive I believe with the present ventilator they have to insert a tube into the airway in your throat. and is an upgrade on the present NHS ventilators.

I am glad your mum is still very fit and healthy at 83.

My dad is 91 and has never ailed anything in his life that required hospital treatment.

So, are you saying once we get over this crisis, and should your mum or my dad require hospital treatment, they should be declined as they have had a good innings?, because that what your post implied

This new machine was designed in only a week, amazing what can be achieved when money and science combine.

Now imagine all the countries in the world halved their defence/military budgets and put it into medical and technological sciences, with scientists around the world collaborating instead of competing, things like this and maybe even terminal illness could become a thing of the past. Sadly it’d never happen.

Plus these machines could save countless poor people. To be blunt Governments couldn’t care less about saving most people’s lives, especially when a shiny new drone can wipe out some Middle Eastern outpost instead.

There was an engineering professor from UCL being interviewed earlier on the radio. He was enthusing about what the team had done so quickly. He explained that there was an existing machine which was designed decades ago and is now out of patent and is no longer widely used. UCL and Mercedes took the old design, re-engineered it in modern materials for modern manufacturing and produced the first working prototype within the week including approval by the regulators for use in the NHS. As he said, this isn't a direct replacement for ventilators used in ICUs but can be used far more widely outside of ICUs because there isn't a need to sedate the patient. This would leave ICUs available for the more serious cases where a traditional ventilator would still be necessary. An amazing break through from an unusual source.

Will never happen and has never happened. All about the dollar signs. You don't think Dyson has been sniffing round designing ventilators out of the goodness of his heart. Good for business. Its one of the things that amuses me about people's perception of the NHS, this 'wonderful' free for all service. Behind that front line of pressurised A + Es it's just like any other business. GPs surgeries, dentists, ambulance services to name but a few. If youre lucky enough to be in on this gravy train, maybe you own a surgery here or there then I envy you.

Once this virus is sorted the world needs to ask some serious questions from the Chinese government.
